Complete beginner here. Thinking about getting lessons from David Gary at the wetlands. Anyone go to him, is he good? Any other suggestions around lafayette? Not looking to pay $200/hr

Yes, I took lessons from him when I started playing. Super nice guy. Very good instructor. Tell him you’re a beginner and he will really help you out with the basics. Money well spent. I’m gonna go back to him as I progress. I just need to find the time.

Walked by me at the range one day and pointed out a poor angle on my backswing while picking up range bags

Took me 2 mos to correct it, but he was spot on, and it was a very subtle, easily unnoticeable flaw

Any guy that can and will offer free advice in a moment like that is worth investing with

Have heard from many he is good at what he does

I worked with David a few times. He is good at explaining things. Also, Mark Popp is good for beginners because he is not overly mechanical. I think he is around $60/hr.

I like John Joy at Le Triomphe 100/hr plus he will go beyond an hour with you sometimes. Simple, feel based teaching style

Is David more mechanical? I want to start with the basics and don’t know if the technical or feel approach will be better for me. Also, where is Mark Popp located? I’ve seen his name pop up a few times in the forum

I am not a beginner so David got a little more technical with me. Mark doesn’t even use video and is almost completely feel based. It depends how you think as to which one would be best for you. Mark gives lessons out at eagle ridge (old Spanish trail) in Cade.

Feel is what you want at the beginning. John Joy will say something like downswing should feel like ringing a church bell. Or skipping a rock. At impact you want to feel like you’re slapping your gf on the arse with all five fingers. shite like that

I have worked with JJ as well. Super nice guy but he talks and tells stories the whole time.

Told me and my dad one time ( we both had a lesson) that he worked for CIA in Middle East. Maybe Saudi. I don’t remember which country but he mentioned living in Asia too.

Mark Popp does a good job at a fair price. I recommend him esp for someone starting out that doesnt want to pay out the arse for a beginner lesson

I wanted to bump this and give props to David Gary. I’ve started to play after a hiatus of several years and always fought a hook. I decided to take my first lesson because playing shitty golf isn’t too fun. It took him 50 minutes to correct what I was doing wrong, ball striking is much improved and scoring is gradually getting better.

+1 for David Gary, one of my favorite pros anywhere. Just a really nice guy and great instructor.
I recommend doing his 4-lesson package, it’s only around $200 I believe. He does putting, short game, full swing, and the last one is a playing lesson with him. I did it when I first started. Well worth that money.

John Joy is also the best club fitter. He cares and will get all your clubs from putter to driver where they need to be. And without sounding like an infomercial, he can match shafts to heads on all clubs and REALLY get you a custom set.

He is a topnotch guy.

How do you think going to see him would compare to a club champion fitting?
