A decent launch monitor should show much less spin and distance on a fat shot, even off of a mat. It won't be as bad as on turf because it doesn't slow your club head speed as much, but it's a noticeable difference.

Amateur here. I make it a point to walk over to the grass after warming up on the mat. I can hit my 58 off of the mat then stink it up on the grass! If anything it gives a different feel and perspective to work on.

This. Hitting off a good mat >>>> crappy dead grass and hard pan. As far as getting your swing and muscle memory down.

Mats dont bother me too much if its not all the voice. What really kills me is hitting on a Sim too much. I have trouble transitioning back outdoors if I spend a couple weeks only hitting on the Sim
