Selfish post. Playing in a tournament there coming up and despite living in N LA my whole life, I have never played there.

I'm not going to get to play a practice round before and just seeing 1) How's the course look right now and 2) Any tips about the course would be much welcomed.

TIA

What is this skins game you speak of?

A flight. Technically my handicap should have me in the Champ flight but I have played twice this year and have a torn LCL from a skiing crash from two weeks ago I am hobbling on. I am not playing to what my handicap is.

You?

Fun course. Usually in pretty good shape. Its not wide open, you need to be pretty accurate off of the tee and the greens are elevated on most holes, so if you miss the green, especially long, it will be much more difficult.

Some of the greens have bare spots in them, but most are in fine shape. The rest of course seems to be in pretty good shape for it not being quite spring yet. Like Chuck mentioned above, it's fairly tight, so it's better to be accurate off the tee than long. I've always loved the natural beauty of the course: plenty of rolling hills and woods to take in while playing.

ETA: hole tips from a 20+ handicap:

1 - par 5 - watch the water on the left off the tee. Depending on where they have y'all playing from, it can be anywhere from 200-240 yards from the tee or so. It also comes back in to play on your second shot. You'll either lay up short of the water or try to carry it to the green.
2 - par 3 - pretty straightforward par 3
3 - par 5 - you'll want to be as far on the right side of the fairway as it slopes from right to left. It doglegs right at the end.
4 - par 4 - hard dogleg left. Depending on how far you drive it, you may need to take less than driver off the tee. If you're in the middle of the dogleg turn, the green will be a fair bit below you with sand trouble on the right of the green.
5 - par 3 - another straightforward par 3; shorter than number 2 usually
6 - par 4 - this one is an elevated tee box, but your second shot will be all uphill and pretty much blind into the green because it's fairly steep.
7 - par 4 - dogleg right; if you drive it 250+, you'll want to take less here; if you play a fade, it will be perfect because the dogleg will take it down the hill. There is water trouble at the bottom of the hill that you'll have to carry to the green.
8 - par 4 - all uphill; fairly straight
9 - par 4 - green is not visible from the tee; 1st shot is into a slight up-hill; there is a tree that can come into play on the right if you're too far to the right; if the pin is at the bottom of the green, DO NOT hit it to the top of the green. You will not be able to stop your ball.

10 - blind tee shot; there's a fairway bunker to be mindful of kind of left middle
11 - if you drive it too far, you'll roll over the top of the hill and be in a pretty good bottom with a gnarly uphill shot that's only about 60 yards, but probably 40 feet uphill. If you can play that shot, great, but I suck, so I like being closer to the top of hill to have a more similar elevation to the green.
12 - par 3 - all woods on the right; I hate this hole because I always end up in those woods.
13 - par 4 - when standing on the tee box the right 2/3 of your view is fairway, and the left 1/3 is rough. It's fine to be left, but there is a fairway bunker left.
14 - par 5 - this is an elevated tee shot, and this hole can tend to hold water when it rains, so expect it to play softer. You'll have a slight dogleg left at the end where the elevated green is with a pond on the right of the green.
15 - par 4 - the longest par 4 on the course; straight, but long
16 - par 4 - a shorter par 4, but it's all uphill
17 - par 3 - usually similar in length to #5, but it's an elevated tee shot
18 - par 5 - the 1st part is uphill, but then it evens out a bit with a slight dogleg right to the green.

Greens 12-14 have been a struggle the last year, but most other greens are in pretty good shape. Most greens have certain areas with some pretty decent slope so getting on the correct level is where the scoring opportunities arise.

#1 - Stay at least 7 yards right of granite marker at corner of water hazard off the tee

#3 - Right center off the tee and again for your lay up or you could get blocked by trees on the left. I shoot the pine tree right of the green side pond and subtract 50 yds for a good 75-100 yd approach shot. Also, beware of the ditch on the left that runs the entire length of the hole.

#4 - Stay right off the the tee

#7 - stay left off the tee, left and right side of green is elevated

#9 - stay left off the tee

#10 - blind tee shot down hill, fairway bunker 30 yards short of green

#11 - aim left the tee, middle back of the green has a nose sticking out, make sure you do not get too deep into the green so that the nose comes into play from the wrong side

#13 - beware of fairway bunker on the left that cannot be seen from the tee

#14 - beware of ditch right off the tee, keep left of the mounds

#15 - if the pin is back left, beware that it is a slick downhill down grain putt that can get away from you in a hurry

#18 - lay up well left and past the tree guarding the green. Longer hitters can shoot the gap right of the tree, but beware of the cart path that can send it too deep.

The rest of the course is pretty much what you see from the tee.

Down the fairway and very much in play on your tee shot if you push it right.

Yes every “practice round” is really just a big skins game where everybody plays from their designated tees. Always the day before the tournament. But there’s only like 5-6 tee times reserved so you gotta jump on it and get in if you want to use it as a practice round.

1. Stay out the water on
2. Is up hill. Hit enough club
3. Ball runs right OB off the tee. Whatever you can do hit the fairway
4. I can run out of fairway. Make sure you don't.
5. Standard par 3.
6. Full drive don't lose it right
7 iron off the tee
8. Full drive
9. Full drive. Not sure the greens are as fast as the used to. But make sure you don't putt off the green. Don't hit it on the roof right.
10. Full drive. You either hit it in the sand trap you can not see or you miss it. If pin is in the back hit ball to middle ball will release.
11. What ever you can hit to stay left in fairway and top of hill.
12 good par 3
13. Hit at the left at fairway bunker you may see a fairway but you have to hit it. It's small fairway.
14. Layup
15. This is a long par 4 it's up hill but you can not tell.
16. Full drive
17. Good par 3
18. If you are hitting your driver good then hit it. But you can hit an iron on this par 5 off the tee cause you or me don't have the game to get home in 2. Just hit the fairway and then layup

Good luck.

Just wanted to say thanks to you and DivotBreath

Yalls pointers 100% helped out.

Should have been better but tied for 4th. Not bad my first time playing the course and on this tour with some tournament nerves there at first.

Double bogeyed my first hole (#3) which hurt. I'm a longer hitter so bogeying a par 5 hurts my feelings so a double really stung. Hit it in the woods left off the tee even though I was trying to make sure I didn't hit it there. Punched out but didn't get it far enough on the right side of the fairway so had to lay up even with my 3rd shot. Hit a poor wedge shot in and had a long putt. Somehow even though I was putting across the top of the green and looked like it sloped all left towards the water the putt broke right. 3 putt.

my other mess up was on 10. Knew I'd reach the fairway bunker with my driver so I went safe off the tee with my 3H, my favorite club. It's a straight missile usually but I lose it OB right.

Caught a bad break on 7. Hit a perfect fade around the dogleg but it hopped hard right and wound up right behind a tree.

Only complaint about the course was the hardpan. But that's Louisiana for you. Early in the year I think the greens will come around and be in better shape in a month or two. Rolled smooth despite some flaws. Would definitely come play again if they do it there again next year.

I was wondering how you did when I saw all the hubbub going on up at the clubhouse Saturday.

I putt on the 3rd green late in the evening a lot, and that green will sometimes do some goofy things with your ball that you don't think will happen.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Glad you enjoyed it! And yes, #3 green has a very slight crown in the green that causes putts on the back half of the green to break towards the bunker and away from the water. It is deceptive.

The hard pan is an unfortunate result of the LA soil and all the trees on the course sucking up the moisture during the heat of the summer. The course places a premium on hitting the fairway and finding grass!

I was cruising right along until I got to the 3rd green. It was my 8th hole of the day. Hit my tee ball in the trees right. Recovery punch out I thought was good but kept running to the left so had to chip up to the correct side of the fairway. Hit my 4th shot to 15’ short of the pin. Thought I was in perfect position, walk away with bogey at worst. Ended up 4 putting and then had a stretch of 3 putts following that. 40 putts total on the day and all of my 3 putts came after the 3rd hole. Rough day.
