I know I know, the answer you want to say is he should go swing a bunch and see what he likes but hat isn’t going to happen.

Without having him test them and trying to spend ~$500 on clubs that are as forgiving as I can find I’m looking at the Callaway X2’s I found for $400 and I’ve heard they’re really forgiving, any other suggestion?

Thanks

Actually no. Our advice is get a cheap set like those x’s and learn to make solid contact. Next, get some lessons and groove a swing. Then, get your second set based on your needs.

Advice on those X2’s. If you are taller than 6’ you MAY need longer than standard clubs

1st - Ping makes some of the best beginner irons in that you can grow with them. They aren't shovels. I gamed a set of Ping G25 irons and they were hands down some of the most impressive irons.

2nd - Ping grooves don't wear out, so you can normally find a good set on eBay for CHEAP.

You're welcome

That’s good advice.

what if he's got a strong arch putting style? That "expensive" putter would be disastrous

I play G25s now and I'm an 11 handicap. Love my Pings.
Should I think about moving away a bit from GI irons?

I was in the same ball park when I played the G25's. It's up to you really. Those, IMO, are some of the best irons to date simply because of forgiveness and workability. I started playing golf using smaller profile irons and those suit me better so I went to the i series and now I game the S55's in a sort of hybrid set up. But there are plenty of times where I wish I had the G25s. I use to mash the PW like 155 and I am NOT a long hitter. A must hit for anyone looking IMO.

Also, I hate the G400 irons but the driver is probably the best one to date for my swing. Golf is a weird sport.

I’m a 10 and play a forged iron, sometimes I wish a had a GI iron. My miss is out on the toe, and a more forgiving club would be nice. However, most GI irons look to clunky and don’t fit my eye.

It really depends on your misses with irons.

So you are using irons that dont suit your game because the right ones dont "look good", coach chappy?!?

Get therapy.

That’s not the same as a Club “looking good.” Most GI irons just don’t inspire much confidence for me. Furthermore, I never said I’m hitting the wrong irons currently. I could probably use a more forgiving Club, but certainly don’t need it.

For a beginner, go to the local Walmart. Buy the adult set and go hit balls with a 3 wood at the range until you make solid contact 100% of the time. Once you can move it forward and learn to love the game, Ping G20's or G25's wouldn't be too expensive and they hit so sweet.
