I've never played in NOLA and will be there Thursday - Sunday. Looking to play Friday. Is this course worth the money or do you recommend anywhere else.

Not a bad course at all. Far as public goes it’s that one, TPC or English turn. For the value I’d say bayou oaks.

Thanks for the input. I believe I'll go ahead and book. Thanks again!

It's usually a really well kept course for as much traffic as it gets, but it's one of the more boring layouts you'll play. I always had a good time playing it for the twilight rate when I lived there, but the normal rates are way overpriced in my opinion. Problem is you won't have really many more public options in New Orleans anyways.

I think it’s like 80 bucks for LA residents depending when you play. Considering there’s some goat ranches around here charging 50 it’s well worth it.

As other poster said one of 3 good public options.

Other than TPC it's the most well kept public course in the area tee to green. The hazard areas left and right of some of the fairways are sometimes a mess but stay on the fairway and you will be fine.

I really enjoy playing it, I know that the cliche here is that it’s a boring layout but I don’t find it to be at all if you play the right tees.

From the blues you play a lot of good holes with tough shots. The back especially is pretty fun. I do wish the par 5s had more character though, 11 is the only exciting one.

So they have a tournament and English Turn does as well. Do you recommend Lakewood or Chateau more?

I'll preface this by saying that I moved out of the city and haven't played most of these courses in the last year, so I'm not the best resource in regards to current conditions.

If you are looking for something actually in New Orleans, check out Joseph Bartholomew. It's a cheaper muni course right in the city. They do a decent job of keeping it in pretty good shape, and I've always enjoyed playing out there.

If you are going to the West bank Lakewood is a decent option. Layout isn't bad, but conditions are usually a bit worse than what you would find at Bayou Oaks South.

I haven’t played chateau in awhile, but it’s usually in good shape. Last time I played Lakewood it was in rough condition but I’ve heard it’s improving. I personally would play chateau.

Gus who used to be an assistant pro at Bayou oaks is now at Lakewood so he should have them on the right track.

ETA: Both are a notch below Bayou Oaks, ET, and TPC.

you do realize that a Pro or Assistant Pro have nothing to do with Course condition? they know termilogy and thats about the extent of it.

I grew up playing Bartholomew. Dad and I played easily 4-6 rounds a month before Katrina. Loved how quiet it was, and layout wasn't bad. It's fairly cheap like you said.

Honestly I have no idea about the ins and outs of operating a golf course. I just know that when gus and will were at bayou oaks they were really good about planning tournaments, league nights, etc which generated a ton of revenue. Since they’ve left, bayou oaks hasn’t had a tourney or the sunset scrambler league.

What input they had on the course conditions I have no idea.

Fun fact the greenskeeper often hates the front of house guys. The front of house guys want to pump as much golf as they can and make as much money as they can where the greenskeeper wants as little traffic as he can get to stay profitable while maintaining good course conditions. Tournaments are the worst 150 hacks tearing up the course for 5 hours getting shitty and driving all over the place.
