Indentation the ball makes when it hits the ground. You are granted relief if it’s your own pitch mark but not if it’s anyone else’s. I suspect, that’s because it’s hard to determine what a pitch mark is - kind of like a healing divot.

It can easily be addressed if they want to.

His ball was not in a divot. It was in a pitch mark, which is equivalent of an embedded ball. Big difference. The rule should be changed if a ball rolls into someone else's divot. A divot can be played from pretty easily. A ball underground, in a pitch mark, is basically unplayable.
Very bad rule in golf, and especially on soft fairways following rain.
PGA dropped the ball on that rule and not playing improved lies in fairways.

Yep. Solves the mud ball issue as well. Kill 2 birds with one stone.

Right, and these guys wanting free relief from divots damn sure ain’t gonna play their ball from the trees if they get a lucky bounce into the fairway.

It sounds easy but once they say you get free relief from divots in the fairway, who determines what exactly a divot is?

Exactly this, you can’t fully define a divot.

You cannot. Divots go through a progression and at some undefinable point they are not divots anymore. Nearly every spot in any fairway that isn’t perfect is likely a spot that’s been hit off of before, even if a week ago.

And the idea that a lie in the fairway is supposed to be perfect isn’t really accurate either. Your odds are certainly better, but it isn’t guaranteed just like a bad lie in the rough isn’t guaranteed. That’s golf. Hit it, find it, hit it again. The one who can do that the best and deal with what comes up wins.

I’ve played for 30 years and this seems like a very rare occurrence to me. Embrace the challenge. Golf isn’t fair.
