Any recs for golf in Austin? I’ll be there in early May and want to get in a round or two.
Obviously, I can’t get into a private venue unless someone here pulls some strings for me. I’ll be solo, so if anyone wants to join up let me know.

Barton Creek has three courses. Really nice. Lost Pines is about 30 minutes southeast of town.
Horsehoe Bay is an awesome resort as well but it's an hour plus outside of town.

Depends on how much you want to pay and how far you have to drive to get there. Austin area has an abundance of courses and some can be played relatively cheap.
High end — Barton Creek, Horseshoe Bay
Mid range — Falconhead, Avery Ranch
Economy — Crystal Falls, Star Ranch, Terra Vista, Lago Vista

Best "cheap" course in town is Bluebonnet (~35 bucks basically all the time) and has good greens.
Best "mid priced" course within 30 minutes of downtown is probably Grey Rock (going to run you anywhere from 50-60)
The high priced options are going to be relegated to Barton Creek, Wolfdancer, Horseshoe Bay, etc.

I like Avery Ranch a lot. It's my home course and about 30 minutes from downtown. It has a good Texas hill country feel.
I also like Falcon head for the same reason. It has more elevation change then Avery. It's in hilly lakeway and has some nice views.
But, if you want to splurge the Barton Creek courses are really great courses. They are the best public courses located in the Austin metro.
Any other recs I would have are located an hour or more out of town like the Horseshoe Bay Courses.

Austin muni courses are pretty nice and cheap. Jimmy Clay and Roy Kizer are next to each other and both are good options.
Teravista and Avery Ranch are the best bang for your buck.
Obviously there are some high end courses but you'll pay for them. Wolfdancer and Barton Creek are unbeatable.

If you can somehow make it to New Braunfels, The Bandit is a very highly rated public course. If travel is not an option; Lions municipal downtown has lots of history, is cheap and convenient.

Thanks for all the replies. I will probably have to uber (do they have that in Austin?), so I may need to keep it local. What is pricing for Barton roughly? $100?
There are 3 courses there? Which is the best/most fun? If you could only play one course in the Austin metro (within 30 min) what would it be?
Full disclosure: I live in Scottsdale so I am spoiled with courses. Also, I like to play nicer courses when I travel since I may never get a chance to play there again.

if price is not an issue, barton creek will be your best bet.
personally, i like to play in bastrop the best but the courses arent in pristine condition. falconhead is probably my favorite austin area public. vaaler creek in blanco is better than any of the austin public courses.

After I posted I went to research the Barton courses. I am bummed that the best one is closed. So you think the Crenshaw is better than the canyons?
I know courses are subject to personal opinion, but why do you like one more than the other?
PS-I'm always available for tips to anyone wanting to golf out west.

I called the pro shop on your behalf. The kid working said canyons was in better shape right now.
Personally I don’t think you get a significantly better experience at Barton creek for $200 vs a $50-60 deal at falconhead, Avery ranch, crystal falls etc

What type of course do you prefer?

I'd like to play something scenic, preferably with some elevations.
I like to play around 62-6500 w slopes 123-134

Obviously ACC fits that bill, but unfortunately that’s gonna be a tough one to get you on.
I really don’t feel like Austin has that many great public courses as far as scenery goes. At least I can’t think of any off the top of my head.

Crystal Falls in Leander is usually in really good shape and has tons of elevation changes. Really pretty course.
