who am I to argue with what anyone says...it's totally opinion.
I look at these things:
controls (layout and responsiveness)
camera
gameplay (is it fun)
graphics (relative to contemporary games rather than across the years)
of the games I've played that people have posted, they measure up with this criteria, but there's additional criteria and that is why I think certain Mario and Zelda titles are the real contenders
level design/creativity
ingenuity/influence
that's why I think Ocarina of Time is the GOAT. Occasionally there's a game like arkham asylum that manages to meet those last two, but this far in, it's rare that a game can meet those two particular criteria, and Nintendo is the only company that really stresses those two...but even now it's a struggle because what hasn't been done?

Age of Empires 2
My senior year of high school we were in a computer science class.
My teacher knew Visual Basic, but didn't know C++ that well. So, the second half of the year we all gave up after only getting through introductory programs in C++ and would all play Age of Empires 2 on the LAN.
Some guy would always be far more advanced and come with a small army wrecking crew.

Only thing I ever did with my VBA knowledge was build shtty Access databases. They are decent and still use them on some projects but it's fckking Access.

We had to do that too.
It was pretty fun.
You could do a lot with what info you wanted and how to make it the easiest.
Like auto-complete or drop down boxes, or adding characters for number separation.
The hardest program I made in VBA was tic-tac-toe.
I didn't know any higher scripts, so I ended up having to draw every possible combination of game endings and setting which was a win or a loss for which side.
The best part about VBA was you could do drag and drop functions and applets, for that matter, with so much ease.

Handheld/Gameboy: Pokemon Red/Blue. Simple choice
Nintendo: Super Mario Bros. The OG, original greatest. Put consoles into homes instead of arcades. So many great offshoots, mario kart/party/sports,etc.
Microsoft/Xbox: Halo 2. Revolutionized online gaming and FPS.
Sony/Playstation: Tony Hawk Pro Skater (Pizza Hut Demo) launched to new heights.
PC: WoW or DotA. Both were revolutionary, but in different ways.

I went back with a walkthrough and beat it a few years ago. I understand its enormous influence but Idk how I feel about those kind of games today that are totally impossible without a walkthrough, and a piece of cake with one. King's Quest is a more extreme example of that same sort of thing
