Xbox Game Pass question: Just got word I’ll be “working” from home edition

I don’t play video games much anymore, and have never signed up for the Xbox game pass, so I’m looking for titles someone might recommend that’s familiar with their library.
I pretty much just play Battlefield & MW type games recently. As well as wolfenstein. So I guess I’m looking for games similar to those. I’ve never played Gears of war, and someone recommended that earlier today. The last non-shooter type game I played was last of us and really enjoyed it.
ETA: I only ever play campaigns.
My other question is, how does the game pass actually work? Do you signup, select a title and play it off their servers or something? Or do you just download the title to your Xbox and play it like any other digital download?

Hellblade is a ton of fun and a short game. Norse mythology and psychosis.
A plague tale is Good
Remnant is a ton of fun if you like Wolfenstein and Souls games.
Outer Worlds is fun as well.
None match up exactly with your preferences but are quality adventure games.
If you just want a really well made game, check out Hollow Knight. It's a side scroller but worth a look.

Hellblade was fantastic. It sticks with you for a while afterwards.
If the OP wants action Gears of War is good. All of them are solid shooters.

Me too. I'm looking forward took the sequel.
Is Deus Ex still on gamepass? OP might like that one.

Excellent. Thank you all. I haven’t even heard of those games.

Not a problem.
I used to use XBOX Game Pass a lot. Now, since I built my gaming PC, I use their PC Gamepass service.
I also subscribe to Humble Bundle. If anyone needs codes to Indy games, please let me know. I have literally hundreds.
