I got the same error about 10 days ago. Called and was told it was out of warranty by six months. Repair is $99 plus shipping.
'Chatted' with an online rep who said there was nothing they could do to waive the fee. Called support the next day. After being on hold for a minute or so, they came back on and told me they did not know how to waive the fee.
Last resort was to write to Xbox, which I did last Friday. I will update when/if I get a response.
