Fellow gamers, I could really use your help.

My main television finally went out on me. It was okay, but my wife has finally agreed to let me upgrade. I have been looking at some black Friday deals and I wanted a few opinions from you guys.

I know the current generation as well as the new generation of systems all max out at 1080p. Is there any advantage to grabbing a 4k television or should I focus on a television that is 1080p with a Hz rate of 120 or higher.

Also is 120 preferably or 240.

Do you guys think there is any advantage to go over 50 inches? That is what my old television was and it seemed good enough to me but you know, bigger is better.

I will also be using this for a lot of blu rays and sports.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Depending on the games you play will yield different results. If you are a FPS (Call of Duty, Halo, Destiny, etc.) kind of guy you are going to actually want a TV in the 32"-42" range simply due to the fact that when you play on a larger TV, your character will have more space to cover to track down an enemy. This is why you see a large majority of pro tournaments using 24"-32" monitors. Sure you don't get that HUGE beautiful picture to look at on a 60" TV, but you get the competitive edge.

As far as the others, there aren't any games that I am aware of on consoles that support 4K. The refresh rate would eb something to pay attention to because it will dictate smoothness. obviously 240hz is better than 120hz but I can't justify the price differential on a 240hz over a 120hz.

The size of your tv depends on your viewing distance. You do not need more than 1080p since the consoles will not go over that. You want to make sure it has a game mode on it because the refresh rate on tv's does not help games.

There are different options and technologies that go into refresh rate for watching tv and I'm not caught up on them because I'm a plasma guy.

I just bought a 60" Samsung LED 240hz 1080p Smart tv. Love it so far for gaming. bought it after seeing it recommended on the OT several times. whatever you get I'd make sure it comes with wifi capabilities and I would look at SAM's CLub for good deals on tv's.

if you're a hardcore fps competitive gamer, then yea I'd go with the 24-32" range. otherwise you gotta remember there's a lot of other games that will take full advantage of a larger tv for the graphics. not to mention I'm sure you'll be using it for other things other than gaming that will look better on a larger tv.

What? This sounds like BS. Explain how this works.

This has nothing to do with trying to get hundreds of nerds in one room together?

My only advice would be to get a TV that has a "gaming" mode. This takes all of the processing that the TV does to the picture and minimizes it. In a FPS, the processing could lead to some delays (although in the millisecond ranges, but may be noticeable in fast paced action like COD).

Players use Monitors instead of TVs because of the following:

1. Better refresh rates
2. Better Panels
3. Less input lag
4. Smaller screens = Less eye travel

This makes way more sense.

So, he's saying that my big TV makes my maps bigger, but not my character?

I have no idea what he's trying to say there

And most TVs don't run true 120/240hz. They use motion interpolation which doesn't look nearly as smooth as actual 120hz.

The eye travel is the real deal.

I have a 60" and if I sit just 1-2 feet closer, I find I have to move my head to see the whole thing. (I sit like 12 feet from it).

When I moved from 23" monitor to a 28", it felt like I was playing on a 50" for the first week or so

You have you move your ironsights or red dot further to aim , or turn around. .. everything.

Explain how this works.

The distance to your target is proportional to the size of everything on your screen. If your screen is bigger, then your character is bigger, your sights are bigger, ie, the scale is bigger.
