Person 5 Royal, DQ 11. Witcher 3. And all final fantasy games especially 13 are my top tier kinda stuff. Is that up my alley?

Yes, especially if you enjoyed Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne. But just note that the story is way below the games you mentioned. Gameplay is easily the best in the SMT/Persona franchise.

Can you describe the gameplay? It is more persona 5 turn based or devil may cry

I think if you liked Persona 5, you will also like SMT. SMT is basically like Persona, just without the social day-to-day aspect. It's almost like if the dungeon Mementos in P5 was expanded into a full game on its own. I personally love it!!!

Turned based like P5. The system is called press turn. Essentially, you have a party with a maximum of 4 (Main character + 3 demons). Each party member has a press turn. If you exploit an enemy weakness or hit a critical, you gain an additional press turn. If you pass the turn to the next party member, you gain an additional press turn (this part is only unique to SMT V and not those before it). If you miss an attack or hit into an enemy that is null/absorbs your attack/spell, you can lose from 2 - 4 press turns. Essentially, a higher risk, higher reward system than Persona, since you don't have the all out attacks whenever you down every demon, but instead you just gain/lose additional attacks. Imo, Press Turn is superior to Persona's battle system, as it adds an extra layer of difficulty and strategy to the battles. Enemies can gain/lose press turns too, which is why the game can be pretty difficult. But it's very rewarding imo.
There is also a mechanic unique to SMTV called the Magatsuhi meter, which gives you and your demons extra abilities once it's filled up completely. You fill the meter through battling demons, gaining extra abilities, or through collecting orbs in the overworld. For example, you can use the full Magatsuhi meter to give your party members a full turn where every attack crits, which means you can get up to 8 attacks in one turn. There are a plethora of other abilities at your disposal, so it makes it a ton of fun to mess around with.
Lastly, this game features more of an open world than previous SMT games, where the main character can jump around. So you can explore to find hidden items, demons, etc., which is a very addicting gameplay loop. Think exploring in Nier Automata, and SMT V is pretty close to as good in that regard.

That was a very good description, ElRoos. I agree that the gameplay loop is insanely addictive. Catching and fusing demons is almost like a game all on its own and you can spend forever hunting down that one demon you need to perform an epic fusion rather than focusing on the main story.
For me personally, it's probably tied with P5 as my favorite Atlus RPG (which makes in one of my favorite RPGs period).

Is this right? I had no idea you got an extra turn for passing a press turn. This will definitely alter my strategies a little bit if it works!

Yep, that's correct. In previous installments where you had press turn (3, 4, and 4 Apocalypse), I believe when you passed the turn, you only gained a half press turn. Meaning, you will be able to attack with the next party member, but if you then continued to consume press turns, by the time it reaches the party member who passed the turn, you will now be out of press turns.
With SMT V, the MC can, let's say, use Charge/Concentrate to buff the next physical/magic attack, have the next two demons do an attack, then have the 4th demon pass on the turn to the MC, which then gives you enough press turns to attack with your temporary buff being on. It's a very viable strategy in SMT V, especially in higher difficulties. Magatsuhi also doesn't consume a press turn either, so typically if you end the turn with the MC when the Magatsuhi bar is full, you should always spend that last turn with a buff. So, when you start the next turn, spend it using the critical Magatsuhi buff, then go to town on the enemy.

So you guys recommend 5 for my preferences or the remaster of 3? I have never played a game in this series

5 is definitely a better entry point, as 3 is way more grueling of a game. So I'd say play 5, and if you like 5, go to 3. And if you like 3, get a 3DS and play 4 and 4 apocalypse.

Yeah I agree, I'd definitely go with 5. I haven't played 3 yet but I like 5 so much that if/when I ever beat it I will probably give 3 a shot. I also have 4 on the 3DS and highly recommend it if you have a 3DS.

It actually has a pretty interesting storyline in my opinion. I don't think it's quite on the same level as Persona 5, but I also think P5 had one of the best stories I've ever played through so that's not exactly harsh criticism. I'm probably 20 hours into the game and the story has been interesting enough to keep me following it for sure.

Y’all definitely convince me it was worth the 35h thanks for the thread: as someone who has played at least 1000 hour of persona 3-5 will I have a large learning curve needing guides and walkthroughs?
Posted on 1/14/22 at 12:28 am to td01241
Keep hearing this game is impossible and no one has ever beat it and should just give up. I mean I understand buffs and debuffs seem to play a huge rule which is fine with me I technical cheeses and rapes in P5: any other tips?
Posted on 1/14/22 at 7:39 am to td01241
No, you won't have a large learning curve. If you've played Persona, you will pick up SMT 5 quite easily. It's definitely more difficult than Persona, but SMT 5 does a lot of things to ease new players in well. I'd recommend starting on Normal difficulty (I believe you can switch it during the game).
Fair warning, but like every SMT game, there will be a boss early on that will bust your arse. Don't worry, as with enough trial and error, you will come out on top, and eventually you can get through the game decently enough.
As for the story, SMT3 and SMT5 go for much more of an atmospheric narrative (think Dark Souls), where you learn bits and pieces about the lore by exploring rather than the Persona approach, where the story is essentially told to you throughout the whole experience. SMT4 is my favorite SMT game by far, which is why I recommend you play 5 and 3 before getting into it, as it has the best story. 1 and 2 have pretty good stories too, but they require emulation to play them.
