The game received praise from video game publications for its Renaissance setting, narrative, characters, map design and visuals, as well as the improvements over its predecessor. It has sold more than nine million copies, is considered to be one of the best video games ever made and popularized the Assassin's Creed franchise.

Let me preface by saying I absolutely admire the game. It is the best in the series and it was a privilege to not only experience the plot, but also the amazing puzzle side missions and all the mysteries in the cities.

But do critics actually go far as to say the game is one the best EVER? I feel like that is a bold proclamation and a very very high bar to clear.

Then again, I can't say that during my first run through of that game, I wasn't at times thinking how unbelievably engrossing it was.

I have never seen AC2 mentioned in lists of greatest games, which is why when I was reading the wiki article randomly tonight this struck me as surprising.

I love Black Flag and think it is the most fun AC game, but I think AC2 is easily the best game in the series overall. Incredible story, characters, design, etc.

But one of the best games ever...maybe. If that is your thing. That is impossible to judge. How are we comparing across eras? I think story is incredibly important but so is game design. A game should be fun to play and tell a good story. They should also look good or have a nice art style but that is very relative. A beautiful game in the 90s like Final Fantasy VIII or Ocarina of Time look kinda shite now. AC2 definitely ticks the boxes of having a good story, good game design, and good graphics for the time but even as a huge fan of the AC series I don't know if AC2 cracks my top 10...but it's firmly in the top 20 for me.

I think Vice City is still the best GTA game in terms of fun, art style, story, and overall game design, but if people play it in the context of today's games maybe it sucks. Red Dead Redemption 2 got a lot of hype as the greatest game ever so who knows.

It’s not even the best in that series.

It doesn't matter what critics think about it.

I've never played a single game in this franchise, but ultimately only subjective opinion matters when it comes to art.

I truly do not understand why people care about metacritic scores, or rotten tomatoes or anything like that.

Objective opinion does not exist when it comes to games, movies, etc.

To me, none of the AC games without the theater mode where you walk round and learn historical facts about the locale and the era can be considered better than the games that do include that mode. This puts 2 down the list for me.

However, Ezio's entire saga with the modern day Desmond sequences was fantastic. IMO, they haven't been able to recapture the magic with the modern day sequences since then.
