Buy a used console online
Is marketplace a safe place to do this? I probably wouldn't consider buying a used computer/laptop due to all the things that could be wrong with it....is this a similar thing?
Apologies for the ignorance, and grateful for yall's grace

Those places I listed are brick and mortar businesses. They resale and refurbish old consoles and games.
I don't think I'd buy on Marketplace.

Just buy from a seller that has a four or five star rating. Read the reviews of the seller, there may be a one star review, but the review says, "USPS lost the package and I never received it," etc. Not the sellers fault.
For computers and laptops, it's perfectly fine from the big shops that show a lot of turnover (hundreds or thousands of reviews.) I bought a laptop last year that arrived without a fingerprint as if I'd just pulled it out of the Microsoft box.
Inspect the pictures, request more if you want, etc. I don't know that I'd buy any headphones used, I'd just wait for a sale (Labor day, black Friday, etc.) and buy new.
ETA: My advice is for eBay, I'm not about FB Marketplace. I wouldn't list, or buy anything from FB Marketplace, even meeting up in a police station parking lot to do the exchange.
