Using a PC like a console

I haven't messed around with gaming on a PC since around the year 2001. Back then I would go to a local computer shop and have them build me a computer so I could mostly play a baseball game, a couple other generic games I can't remember and run Napster.
How easy/feasible is it to use a gaming PC pretty much like I would use a console? I would only really use it for games and nothing else. I have a work computer and ipad for web surfing and productivity.
I currently have a PS5/PS4 and Xbox1. What I would like is the ability to play some of the games that either aren't available on PS5/4 (like Flight Sim) or some games that are just better on PC vs Console (like Tropico 6 having a population limit on consoles that isn't there on PC). I am also interested in Steam and games that I don't even know about because they're not on consoles.
I basically want to be able to sit on my couch and play games on my big screen TV. Is this easily done by just hooking up through HDMI and connecting a wireless keyboard/mouse/controller to the PC? At this point I don't want to game with a keyboard/mouse but would be fine if I just need them to navigate a few menus at start up. I think this is all standard today but I just have no experience with it.
The next big question is what kind of ballpark cost am I looking at to get set up and then ongoing upgrades? I know that answer can be very long and user specific so I'm just looking for intro ballpark estimates. What's the basic cost for a PC that will run current games like Flight Sim at (or close to) the highest requirements. And to stay fairly current (not necessarily getting the latest and greatest as it comes out but good enough to play current games at fairly high settings) how often and I looking at upgrading pieces?
Are we talking something around $1,000 to $2000 to get started (the PC box only) with expecting a couple hundred dollars every year or two for more memory or a better graphics card? Just trying to get an idea if I can do what I want and if it would push me into an arms race every year just to play new releases.

Yes

I am going to go ahead and tell you to play the latest flight sim be prepared to drop at least $6K on a PC to play it decent and it will still struggle.
It will be hard to get a 3000 series card and build a quality PC for under $2k IMO.

its very easy. ive been pc and console all my life. im not buying this gen of xbox because microsoft is pretty much started releasing all their xbox stuff to windows as well. my pc is way more powerful than xbox so no real point. i think you will be happy with said decision.
cost really can vary depending on what you really want to build and cater to. i havent bought/built in awhile so cant say what 1k can get you right now but i would suspect better than console especially if you are havent to include a monitor into that equation.

Wow...$6K is a lot more than I was thinking. The $2k doesn't really scare me but not if it's only going to be an average system that I'll need to keep upgrading.

I just mean for flight sim. A 2K PC build will 100% play 99% of games out today.
Also, with something like flight sim, your screen resolution and refresh rate is extremely important. Your TV/Screen can really reduce your experience.

That's one of the things driving my decision. Every new generation I typically buy one of the new systems. Then a couple years in I buy the other system and catch up on what I missed. This time it's PS5 first with either XBOX or PC next. Last time it was XBOX1 and then PS4. I like going PS for console and maybe PC to get most/all of the Microsoft stuff.

That's funny. I knew Flight Sim required a lot but I didn't know it was that much. I've been intrigued by that game specifically because I like flying and a friend has it on the new XBOX and likes it. It's one of the big reasons I want the XBOX or PC. Sounds like that game should not be the benchmark to aspire to for me.

I built a computer almost 2 years ago at this point for around 1.2k, and it can play most current games out there at high or medium, and all games older than 3 years at max settings. Flight Sim would probably cause my computer to catch fire.
My understanding is computer parts are at an all time high due to demand.

I've heard that, too. I'm not really planning on making the move any time soon. There's still a lot of games I have on my list to play first. But it is something I'm interested in doing in the next year or so.

this is complete hyperbole. Flight sim runs decent enough on my i5 6600k with a 8GB 1080 and 16GB of RAM

This is very true. I paid about $2600 for a Ryzen 7 5800x and a EVGA 3070 XC3 ULTRA. I only went prebuilt because it was the only way to get a 3000 series card for market price. I didn't have the time nor the patience to watch for drops.

While what you quoted is hyperbole, I would be curious what "runs decent enough" means for you. Resolution/settings/fps?

If you want to play old school stuff it’s the best way to go, along with USB adapters and original controllers.
I have a now outdated PC that’s a dedicated NES/SNES/N64/GC/Genesis/PS1/PS2 emulator using my old controllers.

I uninstalled in now because the game was hogging the frick out of my SSD, but it think i had to run it in 1920x1200 resolution and turn some of the more demanding graphical shite down. But fps wasnt a problem and i was able to snap some cool pics of tiger stadium.
