Unreal Tournament

Bought the GoTY edition on Steam this afternoon. I had only really ever spent time with Unreal Tournament 2K4, but my goodness, how come no one plays these games anymore? Between those two games and Quake 3, I don't think there are any multiplayer FPS games out there that hold a candle yet these games are completely dead. The bots in UT are great, but it's bizarre to me how these games that used to define multiplayer FPS have faded into irrelevance (yes I know a new Quake is launching on PC and there's a work in progress FTP Unreal Tournament).
How is it that Halo and CoD are so popular while these games have basically died out?

We would play Facing Worlds for 8-10 hours on Sundays in college. Was a great way to work through a hangover.

As a longtime Q3 player who hated CTF4, I could never understand the appeal of Facing Worlds.

Unreal Tournament was my introduction to online gaming. I used to play capture the flag all the time, and loved piloting the seeker missile.
