The Show: Guessing the pitch questions
Posted by Jack Bauer7 on 4/23/13 at 9:26 am00
In the previous game when you guess the pitch but not the exact location the box still lit up red, does it do this feature in this year's game?

Using guess pitch hurts more than it helps.

I've heard this before and don't really understand how. Do you play with timing only, or use the hit box thing that requires you move it to the pitch location?
I use the box that has to be moved, and if I don't guess the pitch then I don't have time to move that thing where it needs to be and swing in the time required, and find myself just swinging wildly.
At least when using guess pitch I can wipe out an entire quarter of the strike zone and pre position my contact zone thingy to an area, if it's there I crush the ball, if it's not I try and let it go.

I haven't played '13 yet, so I don't know what the deal is there. I just turned on '12 again this year in hopes of updating rosters and avoiding spending $60 on the game again this year...trying to be a cheapskate

You're doing it wrong then.
Guess fastball and if you're wrong there's a 100% chance it's off-speed unless the pitcher also has a 2-seam or cutter in his arsenal.
On the contrary, if the pitcher has 3 pitches, (4-seam, 2-seam, off-speed) guess off-speed and if you're wrong there's a 100% chance it's a fastball.
Now location is a whole different story. I usually guess fastball up in the zone and go from there.
Using it hurts more than it helps because you are relying on an aid to help you identify what is coming rather than attempting to learn the spin of the ball from the pitchers release. Also if you guess up and fastball, it doesn't necessarily mean that the pitch is going to be a strike. I just think it causes too much hastle.
I would rather just pay attention to the count, and I will 9 times out of 10 take every pitch until a strike is thrown. You can pretty much guess what kind of pitch is coming based solely on the count. If you are sitting pretty at 3 and 0, you can sit fastball dead in the middle, and if it's not there, don't swing. You don't need guess pitch to tell you that.
As far as what type of hitting I use, I use Pure Analog swinging. It feels more rewarding to me to crush a ball 400+ feet using analog swinging.

and this is exactly why it hurts you. Congratulations, you eliminated a 4 seam fastball (a pitch that has no movement). However, you still have a cut fast ball, a 2 seamer, or a sinker that all have movement and depending on the pitcher, the speed of those fastballs are right at or just below the same speed as the 4 seamer. So you've eliminated the easiest pitch to hit, but left yourself open to the other fast balls, a change, curve, or a slider depending on the pitcher's repitoire.
I see what you are saying about the pitcher with 3 pitches, yea GP would be incredibly easy if they had a 4 seamer, 2 seamer, and an off-speed. But you still have to guess the zone, and you still have to make the determination if the ball is in the strike zone. So say you guess fastball but don't get the zone correct, you now have from the point of release to determine where the pitch is going to be, and if it's going to be a strike or not. This puts you in a difficult position becuase you are going to be constantly swinging late because you haven't trained your eye to recognize the pitch without guess pitch.
