If someone has never played KH, where do you start? Logically you would think that KH1 would be the starting point but the storyline is jacked.

I started KH1 today, never played any of them before. Probably sticking to 1, 2, & 3

Ok, my roommate hijacked my PS2 in college to play the original but I never got around to playing it.

Play in order of release, even if you intend to play all of the games.

Been playing 2 for a while now off and on. I had forgotten how great this game is. I'd honestly forgotten a lot of the story to KH 2 altogether. This has been a fantastic experience.
ETA: Tip to any playing through it for the first time: use your drive forms often. Especially Valor form. Leveling that form will give you your high jumps.

Quick and easy way to level up Valor form
Last time I played, it took me about 20 minutes to max out Valor form with this method. For defeating the mushroom, you get Drive recovery, if you defeat it quickly enough, you get 2 of them.
Also can quickly level up Limit and I think a couple other drive forms here as well.

Note: I'm pretty sure the World Map glitch doesn't work in the Xbox version iirc. But you really don't need it.
If you're going to try to finish the Cavern of Remembrance for the achievement, I highly recommend getting Final Form maxed out Ancient Tower (You can do it faster by simply descending the tower after reach the top, the Nobodies respawn in every room).
The Cavern puzzle is difficult enough, but the final hallway battle is an absolute nightmare, there are so many waves of difficult enemies, it feels like it never ends.

It does not, but it really isn't that hard to level the final forms.
I got to the final world last night, and the new fight they added with Roxas is ridiculous. I was sitting there like "how do I not remember anything about this fight?"
I quickly figured out I need to level up limit form and get dodge roll. Might be the lamest thing I've come to in this playthrough so far.
ETA: I was wrong. The world map trick does work on XBox. I wasn't doing it correctly.

I am sort of using this method, but I'm doing it in the Timeless River area. There is a Mushroom 13 there that functions basically the same as the one in Agrabah, but since the "back out to the world map" trick doesn't work on the XBox One version, I simply run around and clear the super easy enemies there to keep leveling up the drive forms and gauge, and also hit the mushroom whenever I get to him.

Just finished up the main storyline, and right now I think 2 is the best Kingdom Hearts. That was a great game, and a truly enjoyable experience. Definitely better than 1, re:coded, and 3. Haven't played the others yet.

Just finished Terra's portion of Birth by Sleep. This game is fantastic. I really enjoyed Terra's playthrough because he ends up helping Disney villains almost the entire time. Good stuff. It was great to get a different perspective. I also like the leveling system. I wish they'd implemented the command system in more games. It's similar to FF7 materia leveling.
I would recommend BBS to any KH fans who haven't played it before.
