Day 1 update to basically unlock wifi hotspot connectivity and eshop and for some a problem with the left joycon syncing to the console

I've been reading a lot of this today. One guy trying to play Zelda said he had to go to the pro controller because it was unplayable with the joycons, but acknowledge he doesn't have access to the day 1 patch.

the forbes write up is jaw dropping...it's the most unrestrained in its praise

forbes has published almost entirely negative articles about it...the reason that sticks with me is a lot of them have been over the top clickbait titles.

I know that the hardware is only half the battle, but it's exciting to hear...we're a week away.

The Nintendo Switch is a Technological Work of Art

quote:

Nintendo’s upcoming video game console is a sexy beast. These are words I never thought I’d use to describe a Nintendo product, let alone a video game gadget, but here we are. Gone are the days of the clunky Wii U and its haphazard, half-baked design.

In fact, the Switch is so impeccably crafted, it gives both the PlaySation 4 and the Xbox One S a run for their money. This is a gadget with sex appeal, and the first video game console to achieve what Apple achieved with the iPad. Making tech sexy is no small feat, and it’s this achievement alone which has the potential to do what the Wii U couldn’t: Appeal to a broad consumer base that goes beyond traditional gamers and Nintendo fans.

Most of these describe how the switch gimmick (if you will) fit into their day...and each one is different which is why I think they're going to sell a shite zillion of these things

I posted that quote because I keep hearing that a lot and Forbes has been pretty hard to impress for Nintendo.

For what it is, it's going to be a really good piece of hardware that you really can't compare to the PS4 or Xbone. It's really it's own thing. But they need games, plain and simple.

Of course. But motion controls and dual screen aren't roadblocks for design. Motion controls are there but aren't a central feature at all

Through all of these threads what has stuck out to me repeatedly is that the one thing that sometimes allows Nintendo to do great shite is at other times the thing that pisses of consumers

They don't give a frick about our expectations

yeah they swing for the fences and sometimes it is a huge whiff...that game would be ok fun on switch with local multiplayer

having said that...you don't serve that up to rabid fans who've been waiting 10 years for a prime game. i'm new to metroid, so I wasn't as offended at the idea but that type of game sucks on 3ds

well they should at least manage expectations. they're terrible at doing that, but I don't think (at least in japan) they know what consumers like and dislike about them. they just live in their world and do their thing

sometimes...great success
other times...metroid prime federation forces

2) weird controller.

The GameCube controller is in the debate for being the most well designed controller ever. And hell, it seems like with the Switch controller layout, all they did was put the Wiimote and GameCube controller in a blender. The controller is still being used to this day for a reason, despite being 3 generations old.

Nintendo has a history of poor launch titles with it pretty much being one Mario or Zelda title and a bunch of shovelware alongside it.

Look at their history, specifically since the Gamecube.

3rd Parties have often pitted titles against Nintendo at launch...and they lose. That or they often create really bad ports (see most of WiiU's titles outside of ZombiU). Nintendo fans will almost always purchase a first game before a third party game. That's a big big problem (Consider Sony's launch where Killzone is outsold by a handful of 3rd Party Game).

Wii U specifically didn't release a major Nintendo release on release because 3rd Parties complained about this very factor. Well, they released half-made ports, they held the ONE game that would have sold like gangubsters (Rayman) JUST to release it on every console on release (it was actually created for the Wii U), etc. This happened with the Wii (Madden Wii was stupid), and even the Gamecube with a launch window Melee.

So rather than a bunch of Nintendo Titles - Luigi's Mansion, Melee, etc. they are releasing it with one titanic launch title and hoping 3rd parties actually come through. Nintendo fans will buy the Switch and it will sell out for a few months, while they roll out the other releases over time.

One time, the Gamecube, they released a bunch of First-Party titles alongside it, and it didn't do well. Another, they let 3rd Parties support the Wii U, and that didn't work. Maybe this represents the middle ground to see how it works?

The Wii is an outlier for sure, just built on Wii Sports and public consumption.

no online store,

VC is different from eShop btw

You will be able to buy and download the launch day indies.

VC refers specifically to the back catalog console games.

I think most people, including me and most in the industry, really wishes Nintendo would stop being Nintendo and actually succeed.

What does this mean though?

Stop being Nintendo? So they should become generic console #3?

Or do you just mean stop some of the dumb decisions, but keep the kind of cooky out there focus? Does it mean the "Gritty Open World Zelda" from the other thread? Does that mean simply building an evenly powered console?

I mean, I think people want Nintendo to succeed, but I would rather they not give up their wacky way while doing it. I still don't think a similarly powered console is the end-all be all, unless they find a unique way to do it (Rumored Overclocking Dock is the right direction).
