Thinking about setting up an account and trying steam out is it a simple process just pay and download games? Is the steam deck the best device for mobile gaming or is something else better? Thanks

Yes. Steam is very user friendly and the best gaming storefront hands down.

Really depends on the games you want to play. If you want to play a lot of competitive games, anti cheat prevents a decent amount of games from working, but it’s not as bad as it used to be. Also the steam deck is surprisingly capable for its hardware, but it can’t perform miracles. It’s best suited for older/less demanding games. There are newer handhelds that are noticeably more powerful but also a good bit more expensive.

Steam is probably the best. Valve has an amazing pro-consumer outlook and looks to stay that way as long as their founder remains in control. Ive never had a single issue and they have a great refund policy.

Steamdeck is probably the way to go though I dont own one. The Switch is your only alternative and is the only way if you like Nintendo games. Steam will give you access to way more games though.

For the record I don't have any of the handhelds for pc gaming. I'm desktop only.

Steam Deck seems to be the tried and true method in this space. It's underpowered compared to alternatives but it works. Like others have said you won't be able to play some titles with anti-cheat. If you go with the steam deck then stick to the 512GB OLED. The extra storage is not worth the price jump.

Based off of the specs, price, and reviews the Legion Go S8 is probably what I would choose if I was in the market to get a handheld PC. It's around the price of the 1TB steam deck and gets you more power. Again you're going to have issues if you want to play certain games with anti-cheat.

See if you can get your hands on some of these before you pull the trigger.

Supposedly Sony could be releasing their own handheld this year since it’s not looking likely they will release their own PS6. The price and capabilities of it are not known but it should definitely be more powerful than a steam deck.

If you are a baller and don’t care about dropping money, the onexplayer 3 handheld is probably the best available and it’s like $1,600
