I just want to be able to play Nintendo exclusives in 4k above 30fps. Is that too much to ask?

Kyoto and Redmond say yes.

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. This thing has a completely different customer in mind than the switch. If you’re playing the Switch undocked, you’re probably not playing hardcore games.

Really hope they release more information about the dock soon, since I'd be grabbing one solely to play in docked mode.

ETA: Ah, well this is disappointing:
quote:

...we've recently learned from Valve that the Steam Deck will not perform differently when docked, unlike the Switch. Instead, Valve prioritises the system for how it expects it to be used most: on the go.

quote:

When asked whether Valve considered a higher power mode when docked, Steam Deck designer, Greg Coomer, told PC Gamer's own Wes Fenlon:

"Yes, but we didn't choose to make it a really high priority design target... we felt that it was actually better all things considered to not modify based on docked status or mobile status."

quote:

That means you may have to be savvy with the games you play on the big screen. Valve says 30 fps is the minimum frame rate it considers playable for the Steam Deck, but that's only pertinent to the handheld's native 800p resolution.

"We really wanted to prioritize for using it in what we thought would be the highest use case, which is actually mobile," Coomer explains. "And so since we were focusing on that, and we chose like a threshold where the machine will run well, and with a good frame rate with AAA games in that scenario. We didn't really feel like we should target also going after the dock scenario at higher resolutions. We wanted a simpler design target and to prioritize that."

Sounds like it might be a bit rough to play this thing on a 4K big screen tv from the couch.

How were you expecting something different

I mean, I don't know what you expected from an APU. No shite you cant play AAA titles at 4k

Edit: I am really excited about it being a touch screen and it being compatible with basically any USB C dock. This is an absolute no brainer for $400

I said the following elsewhere in this thread:

quote:

So I've been a console gamer forever, but have always wanted a gaming PC so that I could play all the Soulsborne mods. I'll only be using this docked since I'm a couch/tv gamer.

So I have no idea what gaming specs are required to run things on a PC. I was hoping a dock might be able to give the Steam Deck 4K 30fps performance or 1080p 60fps, but it sounds like they're not aiming that high. I guess my only option would be to hook a gaming PC/laptop up to my tv, because I hate desk/monitor gaming.

The Steam Deck has been delayed, Valve revealed in a Wednesday afternoon blog post. The handheld PC will first start shipping to fans in February 2022, two months past its original schedule. Valve blamed the global supply chain for the device’s delay.

quote:

The new launch window in February will start with the same reservation queue as before — meaning that only customers who reserved their Steam Deck fast enough to get a December date should expect their Deck in February. Fans who were late to the party should expect a two-month delay to their shipping date. Valve said it plans to update players’ estimated shipping date soon.
