South Korean gaming company Nexon is apparently in negotiations with Blizzard to secure the rights to make StarCraft 3. Given how big StarCraft is over there and how little interest Blizzard has in the IP these days, seems like this is something everyone thinks is going to happen and rumors say the deal is close to being made.

Furthermore, it appears Nexon is also interested in purchasing the entire IP outright and is trying to negotiate that as well, but that seems less certain to happen.

I personally would love to see the traditional RTS somehow make a comeback as a big genre. Obviously I'm a little wary ouf someone else trying to make one competently but given that Blizzard isn't even Blizzard anymore, even them making would be a major unknown anyway.

If anyone is going to so it is the SKs. I remember having to get off at a certain time because they were on and dominated me

I thought that there was widespread consensus that SC2 was an inferior game to SC? Isn't the pro scene practically dead while SC1 is still pretty active?

This is just my limited understanding being slightly out of the loop, but I feel like any time I see anyone major associated with starcraft streaming, it's always SC1. Just based on that, I feel like they could make a better game than SC2 that has infinitely better support.

No clue.
I played SC1 only on campaign.

SC2 i only played multiplayer.

I can get as high as top 10 gold.
Thats my ceiling.

I found it to be better than SC1 to be honest.

I personally wasn't a fan of SC2, but that was mostly because of needing to buy 3 different games to get the full experience.

I understand better now where you're coming from, and for the record I would agree. I found SC2 to have incredibly fluid and fun gameplay, probably the best in any RTS game that I've ever played.

My hangup is that it's a shame how Blizzard treated it. After the pro scene didn't take off they just abandoned it and that's disappointing.

Starcraft 2 is a very respectable sequel to starcraft 1 but it never quite reach the strategic depth and balance of starcraft 1.

In general I found starcraft 2 games less interesting to watch because both teams usually just built one giant death ball of troops that would bunch up and threw it against the other person's death ball.

Starcraft 1 seem to have a lot more minor skirmishes and the battles were a little bit more strategic and had a lot more micro

And if you're talking about the single player campaign story lines obviously starcraft 2 had way more variety of missions and stuff but the actual story of one was damn near perfect two is a complete joke.

The end of the SC2 story was an abomination. Writers across movies and games want to have this big bad all powerful being and then once that's defeated there is nowhere to go. I saw the final couple scenes from the protoss expansion and could not bring myself to listen to the story. The missions across all 3 games were very fun besides that.

SC1 had a better story and characters

I am not sure I could name a character from SC2 off the top of my head

We all know Kerrigan, Jim, and Tassadar. I think Jim and Kerrigan are in 2

Trying to retcon the over mind as like a good guy, stukov coming back infested somehow, the entire story of all 3 sc2 games was an abomination. It's a pity because the story of sc1 is like elite sci fi.

Obviously mechanically the single player missions of starcraft 2 had significantly better gameplay I mean it was like 15 years later.

They couldn't monetize the franchise. Modern Blizzard has no interest in the traditional model of simply selling a boxed video game anymore If it's not a game or a franchise that will generate recurring revenue through subscriptions or microtransaction purchases post sale, they have no interest.

They could easily make a starcraft 3 and it would sell extremely well but that would be it.

Yeah I did love the storyline of part 1.
Protoss and Terran team up at the end was great.

I just love the multiplayer part of part 2. I’m scared to see how many hours I put into that game.

Yes I loved online both SC1 and 2, even though like most people I was extremely mediocre. Winning a game was more exhilarating than any online game I've ever played.

They are very demanding games to play even remotely well and have an extremely high skill cap. A better player will beat you almost 100% of the time, very similar to chess in that regard. You really had to strap in and bring it to have a chance.

And yes, it does seem like this Nexon thing is happening, the StarCraft website was updated with new stuff for the first time in years and there are apparently starcraft banners going up at blizzcon, it's widely expected that's where they will announce whatever has transpired.
