Something I gotta say about Castlevania and Konami

Since Konami flat out abandoned the 2D sidesroller titles they put out ad nauseum in the mid 90s to mid/late 2000s, they’ve resorted to animation and similar media to push the franchise rather than the games themselves. This is actually not considering the Lords of Shadow titles, but those really aren’t the point.

The thing I find the real shame is it’s pretty much been proven (well, understood rather) that the metroidvanias and platformers in general like Banjo and Crash are much more popular and prevalent on the Nintendo switch than elsewhere. Listen, I honestly would want ALL consoles to have a new 2D Castlevania sidescroller with a big budget and a top tier director/producer. What I’m trying to get at is now more than ever would be the best time to make one, considering at least one console’s fanbase eats that console’s genre up. I’ll let you guys in on something interesting.

I’m part of the Bloodstained backer group at $250. They had a backer survey in May that asked how many purchased a copy for each specific console and the results came out that the Nintendo switch had right under 57%.

Now keeping in mind this doesn’t include the “slacker backers,” which are people that can back after the original Kickstarter run, starting a few months after it respectively. So 2015 until it ended just up till May. With that in mind, the total number of backers comes up to just under 65,000 at 64,867.

If you divide that up percentage wise, you get 36,974 backers out of a possible 64,867. The game is being released for literally every other console in existence at the moment, so no other console came even close, with the highest other system being the PS4 I believe hovering right below 15-20%.

Clearly they’d make bank with at least ONE console if they released a classic Castlevania. The Megaman classic collections are selling top of the charts at the moment. Like I shite you not, Nintendo’s eshop top 30 at the moment is half platformers and dead cells is at the top of the charts.

They’ve sold their soul for sure. But Capcom just revived the megaman series. No reason why they can’t test the waters with a new Castlevania game (traditional not some lords of shadow shite). I don’t know. I’m rambling on about something that’s unobtainable most likely, but I feel like if they actually paid attention to the market they’d know at least an HD REMASTER of like Symphony or something would sell like hot cakes.

Rant over.

Konami has no fricks to give at this point because they have pretty much retreated into making slot machines and pachinko.

They may as well license out the series to someone who will make titles and pay them royalties.

Hell, not as if they’re getting hurt if properties such as Castlevania, Contra, Gradius, Parodius, etc get devalued through shitty games because they aren’t planning to use them anyway.

I figured people just moved on to games like shovel knight and hollow knight. Maybe with Simon being announced in Smash bros there might be something up their sleeves?

Lords of Shadow was great. I'd prefer that over another 2D title. Maybe a Symphony of the Night sequel in the style of Bloodborne or Dark Souls would be cool.

I hope you’re still sane.

Like I said, I wouldn’t want it to be a Switch exclusive by any means. Castlevania classic titles need as much sales and exposure in a hypothetical situation as possible to imply to Konami there’s still a market.

I was just saying that on the Switch at the very least would be an almost guaranteed hit, even in HD pixel style, as seen with Octopath Traveler. Even if they had to gauge interest with something like a delayed exclusive type deal similar to Crash N-Sane Trilogy.

Konami is just Bioware types of stupid and so fricking greedy.

Well Konami appeared to be getting out of the gaming business altogether. Looks like they might be back in, but they took some hits with Kojima leaving and the PR nightmare with the rumors of their dictatorial working conditions.

A few of those have been released on mobile platforms but IMO almost every classic game is devalued when it's released on mobile. (Galaga is owned by NAMCO)

I want to like the mobile version of Galaga so much but holy frick between the meh touch controls where half the time I die b/c my finger is in the way of enemies flying in or b/c I lift my finger off the phone for a split second and the NEVER ENDING ads for other bullshite free to play games (GTFO Toon Blast, I don't want you) that you can't even pay your way out of I stopped playing.

It's sad too b/c the core game is actually pretty good.

Disagree. Pachinko machines are much cheaper to design for and have higher profit margins than video games.
