Some gamers seriously need help, re: female generals in Total War Rome II

First off, all of the sudden, the game started getting review bombed on Steam:
Mark Brown
People wondering what was up, didn't take long to find out.
Then CA puts out a statement:
I'm anti SJW on a lot of stuff, but the pendulum has swung the complete other way towards idiocy with a lot of the misguided and pointless meltdowns.
If you're unhappy about a game, don't play and put money into it. Simple.

Total War: Rome II is currently getting review bombed on Steam. Despite positive reviews since launch, its suddenly had a huge influx of negative reviews in the last couple days.

Must be in response to something that Creative Assembly recently changed, right? Nope!
quote:
It’s all about an update that added more female generals to the game, all the way back in *March*. No one seemed to care much then - just some polite discussions about historical accuracy on the Steam forums
quote:
shite started getting heated and argumentative, though. Especially when someone posted this screenshot, seemingly showing every single general being a woman.
quote:
CA’s community manager Ella had to step in - issuing bans, closing threads, and telling a few noisy arseholes…
“Total War games are historically authentic, not historically accurate - if having female units upsets you that much you can either mod them out or just not play.”
quote:
This all got picked up by the usual subjects - like a GamerGate friendly blog called OneAngryGamer. Which then got referenced on, drum roll please!, the neo nazi site Daily Stormer. No links, these sites don’t need oxygen
quote:
NOW suddenly it’s a big deal. It’s only now after the articles were published that the review bombing began. And the Steam forums become a complete shite show.
quote:
A lot of the hate is directed towards Ella and calling for her to make a public apology video, or be fired. I don’t need to remind you of the history of Gamers campaigning to get women fired from the games industry, do I.
quote:
But the whole thing is so dumb! Someone on Steam extracted the code that decided how frequently female generals pop up, for each factions. For some it’s impossible. Most have a very low (11-16%) chance. Only the Kush has a high chance, at 50% female.

Big difference I don't lose my mind on stupid stuff.
Or I can ignore a lot of it, like most can't.

Yea, that is a stupid meltdown.
What I think is really starting to get under the skin of a large portion of gamers is that the vast majority of this is pandering to a small subset of the gaming community.

I mean I get the complaint and it would be kind of annoying I guess, but I would just mod it and move on
Posted on 9/25/18 at 12:34 pm to LewDawg
And I agree with you, sicboy is very SJW.

Is this much drama really necessary for something a bunch of dumb 13 year old trolls posted on steam?
This feels like a publicity stunt for total war.

I could be totally wrong, but I always thought most Total War players were in their late teens, 20’s.
Partly because I grew up with them and still fire it up every once in awhile, but who knows

Nah you’re probably right, I know I’m in that demographic. But you could have some dumbass kids that have never played the game that just feel like posting some stupid shite.
I don’t know, this just seems silly to me. Both sides are overreacting.

Maybe so, and I'm not up to speed on my gaming history, but if you're a developer and you can look back and say "we haven't featured a lot of women/minority characters in our games", and they decide to do so on their own volition, why is the automatic response for a lot of the gaming community that it's SJW propoganda? That's the part that gets me. Sure there are instances where it's forced and unnecessary, but even seemingly benign design decisions get crucified because it's a woman or a black guy.
Middle ground is getting ignored.

Well, when I'm looking at the steam store, anything with recent reviews that say "overwhemingly negative" I typically skip over. That's my fault for not looking into it deeper, but that will cost a lot of sells.

It is reaching a head in the gaming community.
Think about it. You have a community made up of probably 90+% males. Half of the pandering is don’t to what is likely <10% of gamers.
Hell, only ~6% of females see themselves as gamers.
I’m just saying, when all games are being built around the retarded notion of progressivism/diversity politics, rather than simply making a good game, it starts to grate on people.
Take the new Battlefield as an example. The developers were bragging and focusing on the idea that women are now in the game. Is that a big deal? Not at all.
It likely will have a very minimal impact on drawing in customers, but that is where these developers focus, rather than improving games.
It is reaching a point where it isn’t just the core audience that is being pushed out, like what tended to be the case, but the male audience itself is put secondary.
Many gamers are young and overly-emotional. They take things to extremes.
This is just an example of their response.
As an aside, I don’t know many females who enjoy playing video games at all.

I don’t necessarily see it as propaganda, but it is something that will make me not buy the game.
Is it COD or Battlefield that has introduced the women WWII soldiers?
That’s something that is a deal breaker for me and at least IMO, feels forced.
This instance in Total War is not a big deal to me, largely in part because you can mod it out or play as a faction that doesn’t generate female generals. The devs give you an option.

As for minorities, I don’t think people care too much unless it results in a fundamental change, like Ciri in The Witcher show, or placing blacks and females into roles in the Nazi SS.

Battlefield V has the woman on the cover. Won't get into that again

Basically what Jordan Peterson has said. If you keep hitting people over the head with identity politics, eventually white males are gonna say that if identity politics is the game, we’ll play and we’ll win.
Identity politics is to blame for this toxic environment where even a change as innocuous as this one elicits such an emotional response.

Battlefield V has the woman on the cover.
Why?
Did they think it would bring more females into gaming?
Were they pandering to just a small percentage of their fans?
What was the point?
Posted on 9/25/18 at 12:59 pm to Scruffy
What does it matter? Does every female character garner this kind of response?
I said I wasn't going to get into it....
It's a fictionalized game. The series always has been. The realism and accuracy came with the gameplay, not the stories and settings. Battlefield lets you use a blow torch to repair a tank from a few RPG blasts in the matter of seconds. Same said blow torch will fix a bridge. Ejecting out of a jet, blowing up another jet with a rocket, then getting back into your jet.
It's still a video game. There are a ton of other games that deal with historical accuracy. Or better yet, I can go watch a documentary or read a book on these wars. Having a female character, one that will be in a game mode that I probably won't play anyways, is so goes beyond not being a big deal, and the outrcy is pretty embarassing.
There are plenty of other issues to raise your blood pressure at, but we constantly hunt down reasons to lose it because we swear those damn progs are at it again.

I'm sorry. As a grown man with a family, I'm having a real hard time understanding the need for the outrage sometimes. There's a lot more out there that concerns me other than women in games.
