Small Read on Nintendo Development

Just a small peek inside how they operate:
As I've always said, the idea that Nintendo should drop the hardware isn't something people should want if they truly like Nintendo games. This is their approach, and it's part of why they make the games they do, even if they often make some questionable decisions.
quote:
“The thinking that guides us is: what can we do to pleasantly surprise players? It’s not that we’re consciously trying to innovate; we’re trying to find ways to make people happy. The result is that we come up with things other people have not done.”
quote:
“In many cases, we begin by assigning a small group to a project; not necessarily senior staff, but developers, to try and come up with ideas. Those lead to the end product. Super Mario Odyssey is a good example to explain this: we actually had several small groups and as a result we had many different ideas, which we then put together to make a single product. Naturally during the course of early development, we find the right mission for each project. I believe every game has a different mission. With [Nintendo Switch launch game] 1-2 Switch, for example, the mission was to make a party game where players would not have to look at the screen – where people would face each other.”
quote:
“We have the software team and the hardware team working very closely together,” elaborates Takahashi. “From the hardware perspective, they will sometimes come to the software group and say, ‘We have this particular chipset that we’re thinking about using in our next system, can you take advantage of this?’ But sometimes, the software team goes to hardware team and says, ‘We’re working with this theme, can you look into the technical possibilities, and see if you can come up with hardware features to accommodate it?’
“This is the advantage we have at Nintendo as a software/hardware integrated organisation – when we do research for our new hardware systems, our software developers, our artists, our programmers and our hardware engineers all get together and decide what we should aim for. We’ve been doing that for many years.”

I know that the PlayStation is still running the show, and the Xbox one has no problem getting any third-party love, but I feel like we're on the verge of seeing a shift in the gaming landscape.
While I'm not saying that Sony and Microsoft are going to shut their doors on the PlayStation and Xbox, I do think we are going to start seeing people age out of that generation of gaming. I believe that Nintendo knew this was coming as well and have designed a device that has brought gaming back to people that thought they didn't have time for it anymore. If you were 15 when you got your PlayStation, you're knocking 40 now. I'm not saying you can't enjoy the hobby at 40 years old, but the schedule at which Xbox and Playstation games release at makes it pretty hard to keep any sustained enthusiasm from game to game.
The Sony PlayStation is ruling the roost without a doubt, but I think what we're seeing right now is a Nintendo Renaissance. And Sony is certainly going to need one too if they think raw horsepower is going to take them to the mid 2020s.

I don't necessarily think it's a renaissance. What I do thing is as the gaming experience becomes more ubiquitous - consoles, mobile, set top boxes, PCs, AR, etc. - I see us getting better tools down the line that make the code and the games themselves more ubiquitous. Like i said in the other thread, what if in the next 5 years upscaling and downscaling games will become far easier? As in, you make one set of code, one game, and it can be nearly immediately ported to every system - not just the consoles?

What about a 15 year old buying a console this year? That's a large demographic that I'm sure makes up a very large chunk of their sales
You're describing the hardships and concerns of a 15 year old that bought an original PlayStation many years ago. That group of gamers is pretty small at this point since people mature and grow out of gaming.

No doubt, but 15 year olds now didn't grow up playing handicapped franchises.
I find it tough to get down with these battle royale and shared world online spaces. And honestly I think they will fizzle sooner rather than later.
That's just my guess.

I tried the switch, it stayed in my top drawer for months collecting dust. The only thing I play is Madden during football season, NBA during Basketball season and Baseball during baseball season. It’s a game by game thing as well, I never go all out and play all day anymore, I play a game or 2 and I’m done for the day.

If that's all you play on a Nintendo system, you're a complete fool for buying it.

Not like they make good games or anything.

Battlefield and COD are rumoured to be developing BR modes for their next games. Not going away anytime soon.

I'd disagree. Arena/BR style is here to stay for a long time. The growth will slow,, and people will chase the next thing and get worn out, but it is a viable genre for the forseeable future.
