Is it just not fast enough?
PlayStation recommends sequential read speeds of 5,500MB/s or faster. The WD Black Gen 3 seems to be up to 3,470MB/s and the ADATA seems to be up to 3,900MB/s.

The first one is Gen 3 and not 4 and the 2nd one has too slow of speeds. Refer to Sony for the minimum requirements.
quote:
Which M.2 SSDs can be used with a PS5 console? It’s important that you only use a supported M.2 SSD to expand your PS5 console storage and that meets the following requirements:
M.2 SSD requirements for PS5 consoles
Interface PCI-Express Gen4x4 supported M.2 NVMe SSD (Key M)
Storage 250 GB - 4 TB
Supported sizes 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, 22110 Size including heat-dissipation mechanism
Width: up to 25 mm Length: 30/40/60/80/110 mm
Thickness: up to 11.25 mm (up to 8.0 mm from above the board, up to 2.45 mm from below the board)
Sequential read speed 5,500MB/s or faster is recommended
Socket type Socket 3 (Key M)
Using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink and a heat transfer sheet. You can attach these to your M.2 SSD yourself, either in a single-sided format, or double-sided format (single-sided cooling structures are an easier fit). There are also M.2 SSDs that have cooling structures (such as heatsinks) built-in. For information on how to attach the heat dissipation mechanism, check the instructions that come with it.

dont know shite about this stuff but whats wrong with using the wd black gen 3 vs gen 4?
Just an FYI, if you don’t buy Gen 4 or have the 5500 read speed, it will not work. Sony won’t even let the PS5 boot up with an incompatible drive.

Is it going to fit with a heat sink? Looks like a narrow fit.

WD_BLACK 1TB SN850 w/ heatsink is "temp out of stock" on Amazon, but you can still order it.

The WD SN850 definitely fits. I installed that one.
Here is a Verge article if you want to put your own heatsink on a drive that you can find.

Best Buy has these instock here in Lafayette, but you'll have to put your own heatsink on it.

Okay thanks I just felt like Best Buy slapped a few compatible with ps5 tags on expensive products just so we would buy those.

Has anyone purchased an M.2 SSD storage device? If so, which one did you buy?
I ordered a 1TB Gigabyte Aorus because I'm cheap and lazy and nothing I'm playing requires "the best" so I'm not looking to spend almost what I did on the console on 1TB of storage. ETA: It was $189.99.
I'm probably going to regret ordering it from Newegg but it was 'shipped and sold by Newegg' vs. Amazon and Walmart that were third party sellers with bad ratings.
Mine finally came in today and it took all of five minutes to install and get going. The speed was over 6550MB/s according to the PS5 after formatting so for now I'm feeling pretty good about going with the less expensive SSD with the heatsink built in.

Nice speed. I think you’ll be fine.

just saw this....
and this...
This one is on sale at new egg for $189.99
Gigabyte Aorus 1 Tb
here is a link to their site saying ps5 ready.
Gigabyte
It doesnt necessarily say it has a heatsink but a heatspreader, not sure if thats the same thing

Though Sony recommends any PS5-compatible SSD have a sequential read speed of at least 5,500MB/s, Digital Foundry has discovered that the lowest-spec drive currently available—the 3,200MB/s, 250GB Western Digital SN 750 SE—performed just as well in a series of in-game loading and performance tests as either the console's internal drive or Western Digital's beefier 7,000MB/s, 1TB model SN 850. With the 250GB SN 750 SE's current price going for about $55, the price difference over the $200 SN 850 is a big leap.
and this...
quote:
No issues with a slow SSD for the PS5 storage expansion
Even though the WD SN750 SE is clearly not up to spec, Digital Foundry has found no problems with the PS5's gaming performance when it ran the storage intensive Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart. The benchmarked frames per second do not differ from the much faster but also more expensive WD SN850. Not even the loading times are considerably slower with the SN750 SE, only the process of copying game data to the slower drive takes a lot longer.
In conclusion, you can absolutely use a slower PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD for your PlayStation 5 storage expansion without compromising the system's gaming performance. However, Digital Foundry warns that upcoming titles may rely on the full speed of the PS5's storage, which could theoretically lead to performance issues in the future.

Sweet, yeah i see your post above now. im going to get this one.
I was just wondering about the heatsink because a question was asked, Do I need a heatsink to install on ps5, or does it already have one? The answer on new egg was just yes, lol.

If you buy that one you basically just have to take it out of the box and stick it in the PS5, you shouldn't need anything else. It comes with a cooling structure already attached.
