For my industry I suppose
I always respected high gas prices because they kept the work coming in
My current company is only somewhat affected so I'm insulated to the volatility now but the higher prices never bothered me
I'm sure that's very selfish, but I'm not as much worried about my neighbors disposable income as I am worried about my job security

So for you, you aren't in the blast radius but you could possibly feel a little of the percussion wave...
I am trying to view this objectively and with common sense. I guess I'm trying to figure out if my point of view is wrong or not. I'm not in the blast radius at all, and I feel like I'm in the majority.

Most of your projects are funded by the state to some degree
Less O&G revenue will lead to less capital for the state to use in their budget
I'd say you are at least somewhat affected

I have a long commute and I get shitty gas mileage
The amount of money I'm saving each month still doesn't amount to much
I'm not saying that you shouldn't be happy to save, but it's far from life altering

At the same time, I don't see how we won't get back to those high prices.

What does that have to do with what you replied to?
Do you at least see how you could be affected?

Of course. But this state can't fund projects as it is. Yet, here I am.

Well I'm just saying
Don't think that it only affects those guys on the rigs
You seem to think you're completely on the outside
Like others won't admit, it goes a lot farther than just those guys

It would probably take consumption completely imploding for people like us to lose our jobs, though.

I didn't say you could lose your job
Just that workload and company growth/raises could be hindered

My salary is probably inflated
I took this job before oil was anywhere near this point so I got in before the supply of engineers got too high

I'm in the same boat as Adam. My job isn't affected by lower crude oil prices. And, I don't save a whole bunch per month on lower gas prices. But it is nice to fill up for under 40 bucks. Not that I do anything extra with the saved $30. But I am also aware that low crude prices are bad for Louisiana's economy, as a whole.
ETA: Had "save" where i now have "same".

Just a little story. We advertise for an entry level engineer a couple of months ago. Interview 3-4 guys. One is very competent and a little over qualified. He doesn't take the offer, we hire a different guy. We advertise a mid-level engineering position and have one applicant. We offer and they accept. Last week, we get a call from guy that turned down the entry level, asking if we have any openings. He got laid off from oil and gas company that he went to instead of us. I get it. It was more money, but now he doesn't have a job. I kinda feel bad, but not a lot. Does that make me a bad person?
