I just put my thumb on the line and apply a small amount of pressure when I cast. I'm mostly flip casting when using a baitcaster anyway

the GFs dad just says frick it and reels over it, lol... I picked up one of his rods last weekend with a spinner bait on it thinking this one looks good.
I went the cast and about 10 feet of line and the bait flew in the woods.... it had been sitting so long that the line had kinked and snapped. We had a good laugh

Yes. Just rinse it off after each trip (you should do this for any reel). Clean and lube it each year. It'll last.
