Possibly a dumb question - Nintendo Switch

Santa is bringing my six year old his first console. He's getting the bundle with Mario Kart. Box says it includes two "joy cons" One red one blue. Can these be used as two separate controllers when hooked to the TV? Or do I need to buy a separate controller to play with him?
Also any advice on other games he would enjoy? I've been out the gaming world the last ten or so years so I have no idea what's popular right now.

Depends on the game.
For Mario Kart, each Joycon should be able to be used individually as its own controller.

Thanks. What about for something like Mario Party? Those would be the two games we would likely play the most.

I have fewer answers on that for a six year old.
If you get a free Switch Online membership with it, you get the ability to play old NES and SNES games like Mario Bros, Zelda, etc, as part of it but they may not be interested in that.
My own kids tend to play Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, Pokémon, Zelda, etc, but several of those are clearly above age level for a six year old with regards to reading instructions.

Trying to remember on that one… my memory is that you can play that with each having a Joycon… BUT… you HAVE to have the game docked and playing on the TV.
It will not work in tabletop mode.

This will be the main mode for us I think. Not sure I want him knowing yet he can bring it everywhere

Appreciate the answers

Yeah I tried that one with my son when he got his own.
One of his older sisters who has no filter on her mouth told him he could play it anywhere like a Gameboy, which is exactly what I wanted to avoid given what happened to his Gameboy.

I am not so sure about that. Granted, I don't play much with it being undocked and not in handheld, but it seems like it should work fine undocked as long as you update the controllers being used. Also, I remember the original commercials for the system having people at a party playing a game with joycons while the screen is sitting on a kickstand.

At some point you will want to get another joy-con controller so that you can play with more than two people, especially if you buy Mario Party. You can find imitation pro controllers on Amazon for around $25. There are cheaper ones, but they tend to stop working pretty quickly.

Depends on which Mario Party game it is, as there are at least 2-3 Switch based ones as opposed to emulated N64 ones.
A minimum of one of those games is TV only.

This is correct. You can absolutely play with the joycons undocked and on the kickstand. It's even featured in the commercials as a feature.
And playing with the joycons is fine and it's easy to split up 2 pairs for 4 people to play, but you're probably going to want a pro controller or just another regular controller for yourself as it's just more comfortable to play with.
Also, Capt Toad Treasure tracker is a great game for a 6 year old. Super easy and fun.
