I've held off bc of the backlog.
Anything I should know going in? My favorite game is Bloodborne

go ahead and order another controller.
i never lost my cool much playing bloodborne or souls, puckered bhole yes, but still cool.
however there were a couple of experiences in Sekiro that absolutely ruined me. i didnt really find the game super difficult or frustrating in general, just a couple parts really broke me.
but hey, some people click with the game's mechanics more than others.

Forget everything you learned and treat it as a separate experience.

Doing the boss fights the traditional Souls way (Dodge, counter, get distance, repeat) is not ideal and there are fights they put in specifically to punish the hell out of that style.
You need to be aggressive, stay on top of the bosses, attack them, block their attacks, stagger them down in quick flourishes. Will make your life much easier.
Of course they throw a few boss fights in where the old way is actually ideal too (usually the non human bosses)
Also, don't skip optional subbosses. They all drop a prayer bead and every 4 beads upgrades your HP.

this. you will get pwnd otherwise.
the game forces you to play by its own rules. there's one Souls type boss at the end of the game, the rest you have to adapt

If you treat it like like a souls game you won’t beat it

I never played it, but two bosses specifically I watched a friend, who loves all the souls games, play and rage through showed me how difficult it can be lol.
BOSS SPOILERS? Idk if they matter
The white ape was one of them and then some monster in a dojo.

if you think about it more like a rhythm game than a souls game you might have more success than i did.

The first real boss after getting the first shinobi tool fricked me up. I quit and will get back tomorrow night. I had him down to the last deathblow and he nailed me with an unblockable attack .
Ahh, From Software how I missed you

Sekiro rewards you for being aggressive on bosses that take good posture damage. There are a couple bosses where posture is a non factor and you go for HP damage like dark souls.

Another tip for later, many optional sub-bosses you can get a stealth death blow on to start if you're clever about it. Makes taking them down much easier when you can essentially get 1 of the 2 (or 3) required death blows for free.

Got back tonight and fricked the first general boss up first try, really enjoying it so far
I know the rage quits are coming. Seems like spamming block/deflect and just going HAM is working good so far

General Boss? Was he on horseback by any chance? That's the first boss that gave me trouble but only because at that point I was still trying to do things the old Souls way which was making it a million times harder than it should be. If you killed him the first try that's a good sign you're doing the fights the intended way.

he's probably talking about that very first guy near the temple

Im kinda doing better than I thought, taking a BB approach more than DS.
Aggressive, lots of dash dodging.
It's nice not having a stamina meter

This is a parry game way more so than a Dodge game, talking like 95%+

Your posture is your defacto stamina in a sense. It's the resource you have to manage besides your HP.

So I should be perfecting the block/party timing I'm guessing

Yep, basically if you mistime your parry you take posture damage and he takes only a little. If you time it correctly, he takes big posture damage and you take none. The counter moves are hugely important too.
So a huge flurry of attacks + successful parries and counters all chained together can destroy their posture quite quickly, even if they have near full HP.
The higher their HP, the more aggressive and perfect you have to be because their posture recovery is extremely fast at higher HP levels if you give them any opportunity to recover.
But you don't have to be perfect to win of course, as their HP gradually gets chipped down their posture recovery becomes slower and slower, chipping away at their HP for awhile is a perfectly valid strategy, especially for bosses you're having trouble parrying or being aggressive with.
Most fights I'd get them under 50% HP and then go ham. It's pretty damn tilting to have their posturing like 90% broken and then screw up and watch their whole bar recovery in a few seconds which can easily happen if you go for death blows on a full HP boss. Of course it's also quite satisfying when you can tear through a difficult boss in just a few seconds because you totally own him and all his attacks.

My guess, too. I spent the better part of 3 hours on that mini-boss.
But by the time I finally got him I basically had the game figured out and the rest went fairly smoothly.
God, I fricking love this game. I wish I could play it again for the first time.
