I'm due for an upgrade next month. I've had my 4s for almost 2 years, and I'm going to wash my hands of apple.

So, simple questions: Is the Nexus 5 the best new phone? If not, what is?

Yep, IMO it is. I love the device. I have never "browsed" my phone unless at work. Now I find myself using the Nexus 5 over my MBP to browse the internet, with an iPhone, that would have never happen.

The biggest selling point of the n5 is it's off contract full price, which is a fraction of other phones in it's category. Additionally it's running pure android, not a skin.

The pure android experience is great. I love having Google automat my life.

What sold me on the Nexus 5 was the Nexus's 7 great screen and pure android. If you haven't ever ran pure android than you are in for a treat. Its like having an OEM machine then installing a fresh Windows.

You can put an AT&T sim card in the N5, right? Because I'm also considering leaving AT&T in favor of straight talk, so the N5's $350 price is attractive if I stop doing subsidized upgrades/2-year contracts. I just don't want it to be a you-get-what-you-pay-for situation since I'm used to "$600" phones.

Yea, its completely unlocked, do whatever you want with it.

Your 4S and Nexus 5 both use the same mSim, but you will need to get a new LTE mSim because the 4S sims are just 3G. When ordering sim cards you can't purchase over the phone, you will need to visit a store. The good news is, getting a new sim card was one of the EASIEST processes I have ever experienced, maybe a total of 3-4mins and free of charge.

You won't be in that situation. It isn't iPhone quality hardware, and the camera sucks, but it looks more modern and minimalistic. The design is probably one of the cleanest cell phone designs on the market today, I would say it is but others disagree.

The screen is incredible, native Android OS feels "fresh" and the SoC is quick/fast/unlaggy and much more efficient, battery life is amazing.

The only drawback is the damn camera, the camera is terrible. It can take good pictures at times, but has a hard time focusing. Pictures will take forever to focus and snap or you will have out of focus pictures. None the less, this is purely software related and can be fixed with 3rd party apps off the Play Store.

EDT: Google just released a RED one; grab it.

Any of you have experience with the galaxy S4? Because the S5 release is soon, right? Other than the Nexus line, it seems like the Samsung phones have been the only true rival to Apple.

I hate every Samsung PoS i've touched. It wasn't until using a Nexus device when I finally loved Android.

Not true. The HTC One is one of the best selling Android phones, along with the LG G2 and Moto X.

If you don't go with the nexus, I would go with the note 3 or HTC one. With the new releases of Samsung phones, their touchwiz android skin is god awful, but now that Google has sold motorola, we should hopefully see some improvements to a more natural android experience.

edit: I may be getting the note 3, since I have obliterated my nexus 5. The screen on the nexus is probably one of the most fragile screens I have ever used (and I have used almost every phone on the market)

Yeah, I would rather the HTC One over any Samsung phone. The One is pretty sweet along with the Moto X.

If I wouldn't have purchased the Nexus 5, the Moto X would have been my second choice.

Hmm, the fragile screen may be an issue for me. I've maybe dropped my iphone 2-3 times since i had it, always from waist height, and it's been fine, and one time it was on the pavement. I use a very thin, low-profile case for it. I'm not a fan of buying a nice phone and bulking it up with rubber armor. I do always meticulously apply a static-style clear screen protector though.

I'm usually extremely careful with my phones since I hate using cases, and this was my first time to have a phone break since I've owned the iPhone 4 about 3 years ago. It was my first drop with the n5 (from about 4 feet) and the screen was destroyed. I have then quit giving a shite about this phone, and abuse the hell out of it

Fragile screen?

I never kept any of my phones in a case and repeatedly dropped this Nexus 5. Seems fine to me.

Whatever you do though, I would stay away from Samsung. You will hate the junk and the "plastic" feeling of their devices. Look into the Moto X, LG, and HTC One. Moto X also has a nearly pristine Android experience.

HTC One over any Samsung phone

The note 3 is my second phone of choice. It pisses me off google uses the s4 and makes a play edition, but not the note 3. I would pay $700 in a heartbeat for a stock android note 3.

Here is my preferred phone list...

1) Nexus 5
2) Note 3
3) HTC One and S4 play edition
4) Htc One
5) Moto X
6) S4
7) LG G2

The note 3 has a "leather-ish" back that makes it 100000x better than the plastic, and Samsung will most likely use that for the future phones as well.

I really hope Samsung deshits touchwiz, which is likely to happen. That would make the note 3 godly amazing. It's spec sheet is insane for a phone, but that fricking resource hogging touchwiz bogs it down

Yeah the GF's little sister has a S4 and hates it. She is always bitching about touchwiz. You can't totally disable it huh?
