Yeah I was afraid it might be inactive. The naos looks fricking nice. Newegg had the naos 8200 on open box a few weeks ago for around $50

Now I need a good imager program for my laptop HDD that died. I had a lot of stuff on it I desperately need and none of the programs I have tried so far can access it even though Windows recognizes the HDD.

Try a Ubuntu live CD. I've used it before to recover files.
It will let you see you windows partition and access to the files.
Oh, you can run it on a USB flash drive. That's the way I use it.

Could a virus had done this to my HDD? I have SMART enabled on it and without warning my HDD died. It will still recognize it in Windows though when I put it on my desktop drive bay but I can't access my files. I seriously think the HDD is still good and that something has locked it up.

Try the live CD/USB though. You can run it straight from the drive/disk so you don't have to install anything.

There are Trojans that can keep you from accessing your account but I've always been able to take over ownership of the user folder after the infected drive is on my bench computer via external cradle. I've not heard of what you are describing though, at least not from a virus.
