I'm diving in as long as the numbers hold up to the *around* 20% gains over the non 3D Zen 4.
My holding off is predicated on the first gen AM4 boards nearly missing out on supporting the last gen AM4 chips, and being delayed for months before they did. Where the second gen AM4 boards were part of the initial bios release for the 5000 series. I want to make sure the next board I buy gets me all the way through AM5. And at which point I’m waiting until next year for the board, I might as well wait for the next x3D chip.

Yeah and I'm the opposite I want in on the new tech immediately I hate waiting for no reason.
Certainly not going to wait for just a mobo I can sell and get a new one down the road if needed for very little difference.

Then I assume you already have a 5800x3D?

Leaked scores for the 4070ti. Would be a really interesting card if Nvidia didn't frick up the pricing, which it almost certainly will. People would snap these up for the old MSRP of $600. Or hell, even a bump to $650 or $700. But for the likely $900 or so they are going to charge, it's going to be the same shite value as the 7900xt:

Welp, looks like Nvidia is trying to be marginally less stupid than I expected. We'll get confirmation soon, but if early slide leaks are correct, launch price will be $799 for the 4070ti, though with no FE model, we'll see how that actually shakes out. But, assuming for a moment they can be had for that price, and if leaked performance metrics hold true, the 4070ti will be as good or slightly better of a value than the 7900xtx, and a markedly better value than the 7900xt. And obviously a far, far better value than the absurd 4080. The 4090 isn't worth discussing as this generation's current halo card.
If nothing else, this should at least shake up the market a bit.

I’m hoping the 4070ti pushes down the FE 7900xt so I can get it to fit in my case

Unless AMD truly only envisioned the 7900xt as a foil to upsell the xtx, I think it has to drop to $800 at a minimum, if not lower. Considering the lead Nvidia has in RT, plus a history of greater driver stability, the xt would be a tough buy at price parity with the 4070ti. But if that's what you can fit in your case, fair enough

Honestly, I hope this is the start of driving prices down across the board. Hopefully my late 23Q1 prediction of lower GPU prices comes to fruition.

There's been a ton of smoke that a few weeks into January Nvidia is supposed to be getting a price correction. We'll see though. They have to do something the 4080s are sitting on shelves not selling anywhere.

The 4080 is a pricing embarrassment. I’m pretty sure I could walk into BestBuy and pick up an FE right now

I wish I was still into mobile, the new 7000 series mobile CPUs from AMD can match the performance of the desktop 7950X. That's insane.
quote:
During its ROG-themed CES event, ASUS unveiled that the AMD Ryzen 7000 'Dragon Range' Laptop CPUs can match the fastest Zen 4 Desktop chips.
Branded under the Ryzen 7000-HX family, the new CPUs are said to offer up to 16 cores and 32 threads with up to 76 MB of cache. These are virtually the same specification as the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X. The Dragon Range Ryzen 7000 flagship processor will also support PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive), allowing users to overclock the chip which already comes in a 55W+ package design.
ASUS claims that thanks to the improved cooling on its new ROG Zephyrus DUO 16 laptop, it can enable up to 10% better performance with the same chip which can then match the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Desktop CPU.

I just went and found the original WCCFT article, and I'm not sure it's saying that they match performance, unless I'm reading it wrong.
This:
Does not equal this:
Just because it matches the rough specs doesn't mean they will perform the same. Frankly, if a 55W chip can perform the same as a 170W chip of the same generation, something is terribly, terribly wrong with the 170W chip.

I think they're saying with the 10% OC boost it matches the 7950X stock.
Posted on 1/3/23 at 6:57 pm to UltimateHog
Even still, with PBO+ being the default now, there's just no way it should be that close at 1/3 the power draw. But hey, if they managed to work a miracle, I'm all about it

Posted on 1/3/23 at 6:58 pm to Joshjrn
Usually the marketing for those are that it's able to match it in a couple of chosen workloads and they market it based on that.
Asus is usually pretty good with their numbers.

Also idk why they keep these designs with two screens. Looks terrible but if it's practical I guess...looks like shite to me.

Posted on 1/3/23 at 7:04 pm to UltimateHog
Is that marketed directly to content streamers or something? Because yeah, that looks like a ton of extra weight for very little payoff.
Posted on 1/3/23 at 8:11 pm to Joshjrn
I guess, I don't really know who it's marketed towards. They've had them for a year or so now.
Posted on 1/3/23 at 8:15 pm to Joshjrn
I'd legit consider the 4070ti if they made a 2-2.2 slot variant, unfortunately that doesn't look like its happening.

I'll be genuinely surprised if it doesn't. There's seriously zero need for the 4070ti to be three slots, beyond companies just reusing their coolers. It's 285w for frick's sake. My two slot 3080 pulls 320w.
After a quick search, it looks like at least one has been leaked: LINK
