4K is awesome.
I didn't ask that question at the time but think it is more to do with console gaming. He got a PS4 Pro at launch and has a pimp Samsung which does HDR. That monitor doesn't do HDR and most PC games dont support it. Only one I can think of off hand is Half-Life: Lost Coast from around 2008.
Edt: IMO HDR > 2160p right now. I would be happy at 1440 if all games and displays supported HDR.

You used to be all about 4k. Why getting out of it? Just curious since we had an argument over 4k a while back.
Still very much 4K.

HARDOCP blasting Intel and Kaby Lake
I guess Kaby Lake really is going to be dead even ~2% IPC from Skylake, and in some tests/games, negative performance from Skylake.
Intel is really starting to struggle here in the arms race it appears, Qualcomm just dropped their 10nm server chip samples today and will begin shipping by 2H 2017 too while Intel's delayed 10nm server chips won't hit until 2H 2018, Qualcomm will beat Intel by nearly a full year at 10nm.

quote:
We have come to expect small advances in Intel IPC over the recent years and we have come to expect nothing from AMD. Intel has produced some fine silicon and injected excitement into our CPU industry when there were no others to lead. Thank you for that, it is much appreciated. As we watch Moore's Law fall, I have expected IPC and core width to be Intel's focus. Quite frankly, while I have not been impressed with 10% gains in IPC, I have been happy to at least see those.
With Kaby Lake, Intel has just given the big middle finger to its fan base, loyalists, and every hardware enthusiast in the world. Intel has just told us, we do not matter to its corporate structure any more. To the enthusiast, Kaby Lake in its Core i7-7700K form is nothing more than what Francois promised two years ago. I would not spend my money on Kaby Lake simply in protest.

Bought an Xbox One S while I was home on R&R from Afghanistan. Now I am debating on ordering a 4k TV from Amazon and having it shipped over here. Also, my laptop is 4k which is overkill for the 17.3 inch screen.
Trying to decide between the Sony XBR43X800D and the Samsung UN49KS8000. RTINGS.com have each as the best TV in their respective sizes. The Sony is 43" and $648.00 on Amazon and the Samsung is 49" and $1089.00
I have finally come around...

KS8000 is significantly better than an X800, or 850, or 930 for that matter.
Rtings shows the X800 at 7.6 and the KS8000 at 8.3 which is first place over even the X930.
Samsung has best in class HDR and by a decent margin, to go with the best 4K upscaler too.
49" > 43"
Also if you go to the KS8000 review page and scroll down towards the end they compare models including the top Sony X930D and say:

As a whole, the Sony X930D picture quality isn’t superior but its price is. Only get it if you absolutely want 3D which is not available on the Samsung KS8000. The Samsung KS8000 offers a better picture quality both in a very bright or very dark room.

The only thing about the Sammy is that the feet on it are so wide. According to the manual the distance from outisde of one foot to the other is 44" (almost as wide as the tv). I have to do some measuring to see if it will fit on my existing tv stand in my room here. May buy it anyway and do some carpentry work to build a stand for it.

Wall mount, that's the way to go.
edit: this 4k Samsung I got for $400 over thanksgiving week was advertised as not having HDR, but apparently it does. Surprised how good this TV is for the price.

That is fckking nice. I have a Vizio 4K which took hours of confirming online just to find out it doesnt have HDR. Luckily we do have one purchased accidentally with HDR but fckk they make it hard to confirm on some of the older models.
Looks nice

Kinda hard to mount a tv to the wall of my room in Afghanistan or I definitely would.

Found the answer to my problem on Amazon:
Base of this stand is only 12x18 inches.
Will definitely order the 49" Samsung now.

Can someone suggest a laptop for around $600 (No higher than $650)? I would need specs best geared toward light/medium photo editing.
My SIL would has a more powerful desktop she uses to do her major photo editing work, but would like something that would let her do some work on the road if necessary.
TIA!

I'm still digging the Acer I bought back in October and it has great specs for a budget workstation-style laptop:

My only complaint is the trackpad (by default, the shittiest thing on any standard Windows laptop), but after some troubleshooting I got it to work.

Well, a few days after I bought it, Windows 10 updated itself to the anniversary update, and the trackpad got laggy as frick. I fixed it by completely uninstalling the trackpad drivers, going into the bios to change the trackpad to "basic" mode, and then reinstalling the drivers. Been fine ever since.
It's apparently only a problem with ELAN trackpads. This particular laptop uses both a Synaptics and ELAN, depending on luck of the draw I guess. Synaptics requires no rejiggering.

Agreed. Made me stay with MBPs for several years just because of the trackpad.
