Started over on the Tech board but figured it may get more traction on this board. I am looking to upgrade my desktop PC that I built back in 2015, and looking at how much things have changed since then, I realize I will basically be replacing everything. I currently have an Intel i5-4460 3.2 CPU but think I am going to go with the AMD Ryzen 7-7700x chip. Don’t see the need for a 9 series and certainly not a thread ripper (lol).

Question is mainly does anyone have a CPU that is an AM5 socket and have a motherboard they recommend?

Also welcome any comments on the Ryzen chip I am going to get in addition to graphics cards. Would say pretty light/moderate gaming PC with basic work functions. Will look to use emulators and play some new games coming out this year (Diablo 4) and a few others. I do some very basic video editing too.

Thanks in advance

What's your price range, top and bottom, and how long are you looking for this build to last you?

Would say between $1,200-$1,800. I already have two SSD drives I can use so that would save on some cost. I am not sure my current tower and power supply would work, so that could swing additional costs. I know for sure I’d be getting a new MB, CPU, two 16 gig RAM sticks (guessing DDR5) even though i have two 8 gig sticks of DDR3 now, and a GPU. My current GPU is a ZOTAC GeForce GTX1060 6 GB LINK.

The last build got me through 8 years with minor upgrades to my RAM and GPU so would like to get that length again

I know that, ideally, you would build immediately, but what's the longer you're willing to go before pulling the trigger on this build?

1080 or 1440 and what kind of settings?

Edit: Also could you re-use your case and does that range factor in a new monitor?

There isn’t an immediate need to get it built I guess. Is there a new wave of chips coming out soon or something? I’m definitely slightly above novice when it comes to PC tech

In the next few months, we are getting the next gen x3D chips from AMD, and we are hopefully going to get some relief re: motherboards and RAM for the AM5 platform.

I was thinking 1080 since the games I would be playing most likely wouldn’t be FPSs. The monitor I have now is here LINK and I was thinking I would reuse.

I would like to reuse the same case that I am already using, but i wasn’t sure if the new MB i would need would fit. I haven’t looked that far. buying a new case wouldn’t be the end of the world.

Got it. I was pretty shocked to see the top end MB’s for the AM5 socket were $500. The MB i used 8 years ago couldn’t have been more than $200 and gave all functionality at the time.

It would be helpful if you posted a detailed parts list of everything you already have.

Your motherboard, CPU, and RAM are out, as you already know. Your tower and PSU should be replaced. Airflow is significantly restricted in that tower, and it would have a hard time keeping up with modern components. The PSU is simply underpowered at 430w Bronze at this point. Your GPU is obviously still functional, so whether you upgrade it is entirely up to you and whether it's meeting your current needs. There's no reason not to carry your SSDs forward, but I would add a small (500GB) m.2 NVME drive as a boot drive, and do a fresh install of Windows onto that. I would keep programs and files I used frequently on the NVME and use the SSDs for larger files, games, etc. And your monitors can obviously be brought forward, assuming you're still happy with them.

Towers are matters of significant personal preference, so what size and aesthetic are you looking for? Once we know that, we can guide you towards some good options within that aesthetic.

Thanks for the feedback. I really have no care/preference on tower aesthetic. Really only care that it is suitable and protective of the cargo that is inside. It’s going to sit under my desk and pretty much out of sight, so not really looking to have it be a fancy colorful explosion like I’ve seen some of these gamers do.

I did read a little more in the 3d cache chips from AMD. Sounds like those are coming mid Feb. That would push me to the AM5 socket which I already assumed I would be going toward.

I’ll look to upgrade the GPU from what I have since I have some extra funds and want something a little more powerful. Don’t need a RTX 4090 and feel like I can probably find something that will perform much better than what I have for not an excessive price, but just not super familiar with the GPU market.

On my SSDs, you mention those would be compatible but what is this PCIe5 standard? I’m assuming most MB’s would still have the previous PCIe standards on them to attach older model SSDs?

Appreciate any insight!

We'll revisit both in a month or two.

PCIe is backwards compatible, but your SSDs don't use PCIe lanes, regardless. They are SATA drives.

Seriously, get that poor baby off the ground. It’s so much better for dust.

So looks like we are getting the Ryzen 9 7900x3d and 9 7950x3d on Feb 28 with the 7800x3d sometime in April. Guess they want you to buy the higher end ones and then will put the lesser priced one out several months later lol

I thought i had seen the prices earlier but now i can’t find them.

April 6. Not thrilled with AMD's countiness on the subject:
