What kind of enemies fills a grand and greater soul gem? Dragons resisted my soul trap, so I don't think that works.
Just killed a spriggan matron and thought I might have one of those filled, but it just shows a common soul in a greater gem.

Not many grand souls in Skyrim even though they are plentiful in the stores.
Making the black soul azura star is the way to go because humans always have grand and there are a zillion bandits and forsworn.
Dragon Priests have grand but once again they might be humanoid thus black soul gem. Not sure on that.
About the only animal in the game with a Grand Soul are the Mammoths.
I'm beginning to think the expansion packs will unleash daedra on Skyrim. I just don't understand what happened to all the dremora and daedra. I guess my character from Oblivion really did a top notch job of cleansing the planet.
oh here you go, link to souls...

So what are the best gems to enchant with? Black or Grand?
Posted on 12/4/11 at 5:56 pm to jmarto1
They offer the same level of enchantment. Black soul gems simply house human souls, but they are still just Grand level.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter. This was another area of the game they made far too easy.
There are a zillion soul gems both filled and unfilled and they restock way too often.
I've been buying them since day 1 and I now have so many I keep about 75% of them in a chest to never see the light of day again.
In morrowind, you really needed to conserve and look around for them. Now you just need to hop to the magic store or general store and buy them out.
Once gold isn't a problem, you never need to actually harvest souls ever again.
I really wish I had a PC because the best mod is going to be one that limits resistances and removes the massive amount of gems to actually put some of the difficulty back into the game.

Yea, I'm at the point where I don't collect soul gems or smithing supplies. Just buy what I need as I need it. So it also sounds like turning the Azura star to the Black Star is more beneficial.

Yes but even black gems are far more prevalent in Skyrim so the star is barely needed. Most caves with necromancers and other mages have black souls in them.
In Oblivion you had to make black soul gems. Now they are all over the place too.
In earlier games the star was a big deal. Now it isn't even needed but out of the two options, making it black is far more useful due to almost nonexistence of grand soul monsters.

Since the Black Star is reusable it seems its biggest use is that I don't have to carry around or store the gems anymore.

Depends on how often you need to refill your weapons or if you are in a monster cave or a bandit/necro cave.
They don't weigh that much and I don't really pick much up anymore so I have a ton of soul gems on me.
I just wish they would make it so darn weak souls couldn't fill higher level gems.

Alright, I can't buy the house in Windhelm. It kinda pisses me off, but I've read around and I think it happens if you do the Stormcloak/Imperial quest before you buy the house. The steward keeps telling me "there's a house for sale, but it's unavailable now."
I also haven't been offered a housecarl in Riften, and I'm thane there.

My only glitch is that I can't get thane in Solitude. I have 5/5 completed but the Jarl won't give me the option to be thane to close out the assistance quest.

One more thing, not a bug, but when I sided with the stormcloaks and finished, Ulfric and the other guy told me there's nothing else to do unless I see some imperials in the wilderness he said "you will know what to do." I figure that means kill them all. So I just found an imperial camp and killed everyone except for the leader. He won't die. Is there anything specifically else you can do for that part of the game?
Another thing, probably most of you know it, but if not this is so you will know:
I've found when mining that it's best to stop your character every time he picks up an ore. If you hit the mine and just let your character go, every three taps you should pick up something (9 taps total), BUT if you just let him go sometimes you won't get anything for your second one (sixth tap). I've found if you stop your character after every three taps you will definitely get the max amount of ore out of one vein. Sometimes you'll pick up two at once. So you can get up to 4 minerals out of a vein.

I've had that happen for the Stormcloak camps since I went Imperial.

Where do you find the assistance quests? Are they just random ppl in the cities?

Just hit level 50 finally after abandoning a level 33 character, a level 31 character, and a level 47 character. Haven't even touched the main quest. I wish I had more perks. Wonder how slow leveling is actually going to be now.
