Wanna explain some of that? I've been going through the game but not far enough. Kinda grinding the Hirata Estates to get some skills unlocked. Got the skill that lets you get health after death blows. I really wanted that since it reminds me of getting health back in Bloodborne when you're aggressive.

It's better to describe Sekiro as being unlike Souls/Nioh/Bloodborne at all to be honest. It's too fundamentally different. No RPG elements, no gear (in the traditional sense), no grinding to turn into a demi-God, and particularly different from Souls, no significant i-frames to bail you out.
It's really just git gud or gtfo.
On the i-frame topic, Nioh had very little i-frames, so that similarity is there for what it's worth.

Sekiro's rules
I'm assuming what he meant since it's likely what I would mean as well. Sekiro requires you to be aggressive with effective deflecting and appropriate dodging to be effective at the game. If you're too passive, you'll generally lose a battle of attrition. If you're lacking in deflecting ability, your posture will get annihilated or you'll mistime and lose a lot of HP. If your dodging is too much you'll just put yourself in awful positions and wind up playing too passive. If your dodging is too little or poorly timed, you'll get nailed by sweeps, grabs, and potentially thrusts.

TL;DR Be aggressive and git gud.

basically, you cant play it like Soulsborne once you're well into the game. Dodging and blocking will get you nowhere, outside of a few bosses. You have to be the aggressor. You have to learn how to deflect and initiate extended "clashes," only jumping and dodging when necessary. Stay on top of them, learn timings, and pound your opponents posture into the dirt.

It took me literally 4 hours to beat this guy. Not even embarassed. Just so happy i'm done with him.

My voice has been weak all day from the celebrating/shite talking (yes to an NPC) that occurred after beating him. He had me on the verge of uninstalling.

On his last phase I died immediately, used my revive and had only one gourd.

I almost didn't even revive because I thought there was no chance.

that's the best farming spot you can find in the early locations. grinded quite a bit there.

This was a very solid suggestion btw

I used that area to get a quick 1000 so I could buy another gourd seed.

Ya, try going from Sekiro to a Soulsborne game never having played one like I did (DS3).

Sekiro's rules

They want to you to engage the bosses, not run from them (mostly, there are a few exceptions)

You either hit the enemy successfully, dealing vitality and posture damage, or you hit the enemy and they block, dealing mild posture damage, or you deflect the enemey attack, also dealing big posture damage.

I played most of the bosses my first playthrough the "Dark Souls" way, which I described as: block (or dodge) until you get a safe attack window, get in your poke or two, then get distance from them and setup again.

This can work in Sekiro but it's very inefficient and actually more difficult as bosses are on average much more aggressive and give you way less windows to safely attack them.

Whittling away the bosses and mini-bosses entire vitality bar for every death blow is also time consuming. When you git gud you can usually get your death blows in with them having 50% vitality remaining, if not more.

Filling your enemey's posture bar is the incentive to keep the pressure on.

I'll also throw some helpful advice out

- you can farm exp and increase attack power after you get the mask. Ignore some website, bosses and mobs do not scale with attack power. You can overpower the bosses to some degree and get an easier win if needed.
- certain combat arts are very good on bosses especially when they do non deflect moves. I found two to be very good and rest meh. Practice using them on mini bosses. I feel like minibosses are mostly training for bosses. My favorites were Shadowrush and high monk
- the axe has hyperarmor and hit through non powerful mob attacks. Double axe hit and then deflect, repeat and you'll break many opponents guard. However this is the old souls way and its better for you to deflect and counter to get comfortable for bosses.
- don't ignore your prosthetic. I found a couple to be extremely helpful for certain bosses.
- master mikiri counter and get the skill that increases posture damage taken with it.
- the breath of life: light skill very helpful for exploration- get it as soon as you can - gives vitality on Deathblow
- once I got 2/3rds of my exp bar filled up, I would stop and farm exp until I get the bar filled then go back to exploration/mini-bosses.
- as others have mentioned 2 of the 40 prayer beads are hidden behind a special area that has very specific requirements to unlock. If you want all prayer beads on first play through- you will need to read up on how to unlock the area.

That's what I like to hear. I was happy to beat some mini-boss that had a lance. Had to press O to stomp his lance down and then you could kick his arse. I have really enjoyed it thus far.

8 week old is starting to sleep more regularly, so I get more time to play during the day. Starting to make a little progress. Still really early in the game, though.

Made it to Lady Butterfly. Im.guessing I need to learn to be more aggressive because trying to whittle her down is tedious. Made it through phase 1, only to have that bitch mindfrick me and respawning. Raged and left her for later.

Went deeper into the Outskirts and found it much easier than the Estates. Chained Ogre was a bitch, but oil and fire made him easy pickings.

I literally screamed and almost had a heart attack when the big arse fricking snake popped out. I haven't been that startled and scared in a game in a looooong time. Was in party chat with a buddy who had already been there and he didnt warn me at all. He got a huge kick out of my little girl screams and freak out.

Horse boss was pretty easy with being able to zipline to him and use firecrackers. Fun fight.

That's where I had to put it down for the weekend, but I'm having a blast in the game, which is nice because I was starting 6o feel like I'd never get the hang of it and worried I'd never finish it.

Having my buddy playing through in party chat with me makes it a lot of fun and feels like when we were in high school playing games at each others houses and sharing strategies. I told him about the enhanced Mikiri counter for the Shinobi Hunter and he told me about the fire for the Ogre.

Game is a blast.

That's one thing I didn't quite understand. They give you multiple hints before the fight that you can spook the horse with loud noises, but you don't get the firework add on until immediately AFTER the fight right? The vendor you get access to after the fight had it for sale. I was like, this woulda been useful BEFORE the last fight.

How did you have the firecrackers for the horse dude in your first playthrough?

There's another Memorial Mob before him. He's kind of hidden up on a plateau covered in crows right after the first Miniboss General in the Outskirts. He sold it, too.

shite I totally missed that on two diff playthroughs. Just looked up it's location, it's def. semi-hidden, not like the other memorial mobs which are almost impossible to miss.

Yeah I was just jumping around and saw a ton of crows up on the plateau and go curious. Searched until I found a way up there.

I have a problem letting go of things once I think I see somewhere I can get to.

Snake Eyes Singari was a pretty fun fight using the pupateering on all the mortar dudes. This game has so many ways to play. Saw some other guy on YouTube play it totally different

SPOILERS, though ill be vague.

ive been very surprised at how the game has opened up after reaching ashina castle. lots of NPCs that im sure ive ruined questlines for, many branching paths that ive explored, and one path that is fairly....explosive...that im pretty sure im not supposed to venture down yet. been going through senpou, and it might be my favorite area so far. and its really introducing some key From story elements that ive been waiting for. all this after reaching the top of Ashina Castle and feeling not quite ready for that challenge.

Anyone have any tips for the Lone Shadow Longswordsman other than “git gud”? I’ve been getting my assed kicked for a while now. I can barely do any damage to him and blocking his attacks does barely any posture damage.

Maybe I’m trying to beat him too early? Ive only beaten one boss so far, the first. Haven’t even tried lady butterfly yet. Should I progress another part of the story and come back?
