I'm around the same place as everyone else. Just got to cathedral of deep bonfire. Like Music, I've got a sharp Uchi +5, and it is bad arse.
Yeah, screw those crabs. I skipped them to. Anyone know what the item is in the cell with the the crystal beast? Right by the black knight.

So I am a Mercenary with the Uchigatana, which I really like, and the Lothric Knight Shield (which I also really like).
What is the best way to level myself and the equipment up.
Basically what should I be focusing on?
This is the same build I started with. Here's what I did and it worked very well. I leveled my DEX up to around 18. As soon as I got the first raw gem I infused the Uchi with raw to get the huge base damage increase you wont reach with scaling till later on. (note this stops scaling with dex until you remove it). I reinforced it up to +3 and it was kicking arse for a good bit, beat the first 3 bosses with it that way.
I invested around 4-5 levels into Vitality so I could wear the Lothric chest armor and use the Lothric shield and still equip 2-3 weapons and rings. The rest leveling up went into to VIG for the extra HP, Strength (to use the shield) and some into Endurance just to get stamina up a bit.
My loadout for the first 3 bosses was:
Raw Uchi + 3 for something like 190 damage early which is insane. Lothric Armor and Shield. The rest was sell sword starting armor (bc of load weight, I didnt want to equip over 70% for the extra i-frame rolling).
Around the cursed tree is where I went off into my own madness. I wanted a hybrid character to gain a few spells, so I added pyromancy, and the magic weapon spell to infuse my uchi on Demand with magic damage. I wanted pyro to have a ranged fireball attack to hit enemies from far away to draw them out of huge crowds. I put ~5 levels into attunement/faith/int (to get 2 spell slots) I then found the Faron Coal and a sharp gem, took the raw gem off my Uchi, infused with sharp with gives a HUGE scaling boost (B) to Dex for the Uchi and am leveling up DEX right now to get the scaling damage boost.
You can watch me fight a really hard Black Knight in the RoS and take ~ 15 mins to kill him with my current build at soul level 34 or so with this setup. (I thought he was a no-repsawner but nope, just a hard as nails regular enemy

LINK (around 3 mins in i stand until about 6 minutes bc I was cooking during this,

I want to add that last night my wife was watching Once Upon a Time live, and I was able to remote play off my macbook air with the dualshock 4 and it was an amazing, seamless experience.

This is going to be my first Dark Souls game. I've read through a good portion of the thread and elsewhere, but looking like probably the best class to go with for a first timer would be Knight? Any suggestions on what to level up early on?

That is kinda what I was wanting, so should I be pumping it up with shards and gems or what?
He meant that the Lothric Shield has 100% physical damage protection and that makes it a great early game shield. The Uchi, see my above post for the path I went that worked very well.

Go right.. Jump off ledge. back stab knight. Finish him off.
You did that wrong.

This is true if not just for the heavy armor loadout you get that absorbs damage. If you go this route start leveling STR/VIG/END at first.

I seriously need to start uploading some of my playthrough stuff... I seriously had no issues with these knights - the one here and the one in the swamp, and I don't even use a shield

im just upping my hard encounters. That said, I am a total souls n00b. I started a few weeks ago with DS2 and I played through BB last year, but this is my first true souls game. In other words I suck, horribly.

Knight, Warrior, or Cleric. I would go Warrior honestly.

I'm hearing really good things about the Dark Sword. Might respec, ditch the high dex and just go all faith, and infuse the Dark Sword with a blessed gem. Supposedly it's quite amazing.

Ok I bought it. No spoiler no walk through. This starting boss has me wanting to go magic build just to get past it. I got so close. I need a break this game is driving me nuts

if you are talking about Iundex then he is there for a reason. Learn how to roll/dodge at the right time IMO is why they put him there. It's an interesting spot for a tutorial boss if you think about it. You can't even get to the hub w/o beating him so they want to get the core fighting mechanics out the way ASAP.

I was sweating so hard on the boss, I had killed the crystal mob in the beginning area already and had like 6 levels worth or souls for when I got to the HUB... and I'm running into that fight like "sup"
I'm pretty sure I pee'd myself a little when he morphed

I just left a friends house who was raving about the dark sword. Said he has it at only +3, but loves it. Said it was big, but didn't eat a lot of stamina per swing.
Posted on 4/18/16 at 2:17 pm to BaddestAndvari

When he morphed it threw me waaaay off. I'm not going to spoil it but there's a simple way to beat him after he does. But just the morphing alone psyched me out as well.

Yeah I beat him and the ninja dude is now slaughtering me

Dodge him, line him up with the ledge and kick repeatedly until he falls off... Save/Quit and go back into the game and get his stuff
