There is a story, but it is not important to the gameplay. You can play the entire game without giving a whole lot of care to story.
it's a fun action rpg, just roll with it. There is a legit story to complement the game, if you're willing to look a little deeper

The lore is what makes these games. I find the gameplay fantastic in every way.
And in DS3 , the cycle is apparently broken, and the world is basically post Apocalypse.
You're taking down the lords of cinder ( those who previously linked the fire).
Its going back to ds1 mechanics. Miyazaki himself has admitted that ds2 was a huge trainwreck at first and he had to hire on a new director to salvage it with a rewrite and DLC.
Which is why theybhave basically scrapped the new ds2,mechanics.

I don't see throwing all of DS2's mechanics out the window as a good thing, it did many things well. DS1 has its fair share of flaws.

It's cool to hate on ds2

I'm not hating on 2. I have more hours on 2 than I do on 1 or bloodborne.
NG+ and PvP were done perfectly in dark souls 2. I didn't like lifegems or the stupidly done level design.

What's wrong with life Gems?

I'm about to beat Scholar with an unupgraded Fire longsword and unupgraded falconer armor that you start with. Forgot how easy the bosses are on here. Only ones I've died to are the stupid frickin belfry gargoyles.
Level design just doesn't feel inspired to me. Dark Souls and Bloodborne were much more meticulously crafted, IMO. Controls feel tighter in them as well
Still have to do DLC though

The bosses have been such a disappointment. The hardest for me so far was the 3 sentinals just because I had to learn to isolate them.

Fume Knight, Alonne, Sinh, and Burnt Ivory King make up for them, IMO.

Sanctum soldiers are fricking me up. May need to upgrade

Surprisingly I beat the gargoyles the first time

Depending on the character build, the gargoyle battle can be stupid easy or ridiculously difficult. How fast can you isolate and kill those gargoyles brah

Their ai is pretty bad too. They just pack together

Dark souls 1 gave you the feeling that you needed to conserve your estus drinks.
For example, bonfires in dark souls 1 were spaced out greatly. They were few and far between, which really made you think about risking using one of the few estus drinks you get.
In 2 however, lifegems are EVERYWHERE. They even become unlimited after you move the first NPC to majula for only 300 souls each. That's like floorboard change mid game. They ruin that feeling of helplessness you get from walking around with half health and 2 drinks left.
Also bonfires were around every corner in 2. Easiest game IMO

No one is holding a gun to your head and making you use those life gems.

Guess they don't bother me since I only played Bloodborne before this. I also didn't move an NPC's to Majula.

Ok that might be true, but I have never used lifegems in DS2, I refused to use them - the bonefire thing did bug me slightly, but it was so difficult in the DLC, I feel like it made up for the scattering of bonefires in spades.

The dlc was done by another director. He was hired to Tue the story up. So glad Miyazaki is back in charge of level design.

The level design in DS2 is pretty weak. Exploring isn't really fun
Posted on 8/12/15 at 5:55 pm to Mr Gardoki
Not to mention impossible. I know its a game but when I go to the top of a large tower in the sky, and take an elevator that clearly goes up, I'm not gonna end up at a giant iron castle that supposedly sunk into the ground with lava everywhere.
But these are by far my favorite games. Football will get me through to Ds3
