Get the Switch but hold on to see if there is a special for Black Friday with games.
Nintendo already announced that its the same deal this year … original switch with Mario kart for $300

You're moving the goalpasts. You said that there has been "almost no real improvement" which again, is straight up flat out blatantly false.
GCN to PS5 is a massive jump. This isn't even a question. Not only are they now able to create photo realistic graphics the depth of field, the amount of on screen colors, the amount of shite that can be happening etc etc is such a large leap that it's just not comparable.
Metroid Prime has great art but people would say it looks like a sparse jaggy mobile game if it was released exactly the same today.

Get a switch and don't look back. It will be a few years before he can appreciate the hardcore games on Xbox/PS.
I have an 8, 6 and 4 year old and we have tons of fun together on the Switch. So many co-op games that that age group can play. The ability to roll mobile is great as well.
Lego games, Luigi's mansion, Trine series, Super Mario Bros U., Mario Kart etc. All great games to play as a family with young kids.
I got the black friday bundle last year, and i'd recommend that this year as well over the OLED version. He won't care about the screen, and there is no improvement in battery life so it's not worth it in my opinion.

take it you've never used an xbox controller for more than six months.
Lol. Stick drift and performing a melee attack while trying to shoot has gotten me killed many times in FPS Xbox games. Their controller longevity is arse.
Anyway. How the frick would a 6 year old operate an Xbox controller? Hands too small.

If you compare 1982 gaming to 2002 gaming with 2001 gaming to 2022 gaming, then my point stands. Nothing released in these kids lifetimes as far as a home console is concerned has blown kids mind jumping from Super Mario World to Super Mario 64.

Switch, but in no way shape or form would I let them have free access to it. Stays hooked to the TV unless a parent specifically allows them to use it hand held.

Yeah going from Soldiers of Fortune 2 to any other shooter was like wait, I don't get to chop their arms off?

Seriously though don’t get one of these crazy consoles for a 6YO. Get him both the NES and SNES Classic

As a father to young children, I can tell you they will reject most games on these consoles. Even web-based games have better graphics at this point.
ETA: If OP gets a switch with a year subscription to Nintendo Online, his kid can play a lot of the best NES and SNES games on that.

God I’m glad I don’t have kids. I’ll never forget unwrapping my SNES… Mario All Stars alone was all I needed for months.
