quote:There simply isn't enough information to know this yet but people are guessing somewhere between those 2 systems. The Switch being portable adds an additional layer of complexity for Nintendo that Sony and MS never had to consider with the PS4 and Xbox One. They have to consider things like battery life, size/weight, and cooling (to a more extreme degree). How often do you move your PS4 or XBO WHILE playing it? Do you care how heavy it is once it's setup? How often do you touch it to see how hot it is in the middle of game of Rocket League? Those are factors Nintendo has to weigh against the horse power of the machine.
In dumb dumb terms will this hover around PS3 or closer to PS4 if the custom chip is pretty much the x2
Regardless, here is an article that speculates more and includes a link to a Digital Foundry video where they compare some Tegra X1 ports to some last gen PS3 and XB360 games.

interesting. IYO, what's the ceiling and floor for graphics...again, I need a dumb dumb explanation

So long as the graphics are PS3 level
Definitely want to see these:
It has a good battery
It has wifi
It is touchscreen
I would like Bluetooth for headphones but it's not going to bum me out.
If it has cell data, then it's definitely the versatile product I think it can be but I don't personally want that, it would just tell me something crazy.

I dont think it will have cell data. But that would be amazing.

I don't either but that capability would tell me that it's 100% going to be what I think it can be
For my purposes, I just want a Nintendo and that it combines handheld and console is butta

While there are a lot of variables, the console will likely have a graphical fidelity closer to the PS4 than the PS3. No, it's not going to be as powerful as the PS4, but it's going to be far more capable than the PS3 - especially if it's running a custom version of the Tegra X2.

Tegra SoCs aren't regarded for their thermal efficiency...expect 3-4 hours of battery life on average for the Switch.

This is a given.

It's likely at this point that the screen will be a capacitive multi-touch display.

quote:I really have no idea. From what I've read, the Tegra X2 (and X1 even) are more capable chips than the PowerPC chip inside the Wii U. I personally think the Nintendo developed titles on the Wii U are beautiful. I've said it here before but I've never once thought to myself while playing Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, or Wind Waker HD, "Man, I wish this game was prettier." I know people say that Nintendo's cartoon-y style is a crutch to offset their hardware limitations, but I think Metroid Prime still looks pretty good and that game is certainly not in that vein. I want my games to look good but I'm not a graphics junkie like some of the people on this board. If the games will look better than what's on Wii U, I'm content. Breath of the Wild looks amazing.

ETA: I said in a previous post that the Tegra X2 hasn't been released but that's incorrect. It's being used in the automotive industry for some purpose I haven't looked into. It hasn't been used in any consumer level devices.

Awesome

I don't think it's necessary but if it did, that would confirm some things to me. I have the full potential being an iPad mini like tablet, email, internet, etc. that's a pretty fricking awesome console and the bees knees of handheld gaming

I would think 3-4 hours max.
I would be fine with that, but I'm sure some wouldn't (especially if it's closer to 3). Its easy to go on and on about how it has to have this this this this and this, but hey also make sure to hit a good price point. I'd be surprised if they didn't hit a pretty good price point, so there's going to be some shortcuts.
Plus it's Nintendo. This looks great and the trailer was good, so at least some bad news is obviously incoming.

Well you can't judge the price point without knowing the full value it delivers
But at max price I'm probably in the same ballpark of what people expect. If it's everything I think it can be. $350 is a crazy good price. If it's just console handheld hybrid then $300 is the max but that may or be the eye popping deal that attracts more consumers

I have a hard time seeing Nintendo go over 350 for a base system, but who knows. Maybe this is a special case.
299 feels right to me, 399 for some sort of bundle (Zelda and a pro controller or something). But we don't know much about the system really, like you say.
Tablet aspects don't mean much to me personally (i have an old iPad that's collecting dust), but I'm sure it will be touch screen.

IF you think of it as just a system, yeah a little too steep
If it's a good tablet and a really good console and a great handheld. I would view that as amazing
If it's just what the console/handheld hybrid, $250 would be my wow price. $300 is a good price. $350 maybe a little overpriced but it wouldn't stop me

But if you're a parent with a kid, tablets are a god send and adults mostly use tablet for email, internet, streaming and mobile games. Having so much in my hand at once is an enthralling prospect, and it would have such mass appeal, it would sell like crazy. I bought some stock today. Since it went down rather than up with the reveal. nes mini holiday sales, launch, but if Nintendo reinvents itself the way they potentially could, $$$$

I would think it has a port possible for a wall charger

Agree completely.
However, I don't think the drive for power is simply for better looking games. It's more related to the want of Nintendo fans to get the 3rd Party Ports. The Wii U is proof that a fairly solid system with high quality first party titles alone cannot be successful.
I still think the Wii U Library is just a higher quality than the X1. I play my Xbox slightly more now (Wii U relegated to a lot of Smash and Kart), but I have way less games overall.

I really hope it's the X2, and I really hope that's the reason they are being so ambiguous with "custom Tegra." That means it could be close to the X1, which is all we need.
If it does that on 4-5 hours of battery life, that's awesome.

that sucks but I pretty much always carry a car and wall charger in my 3DS case so it's not the biggest problem in the world.

Shut up about the damn tablets
I'm a parent with a tablet that collects dust FYI.

Have ya'll discussed how Nintendo's stocks dropped when this was announced? And that Bethesda has said Skyrim isn't necessarily in development for the Switch.
quote:
According to a Bethesda spokesperson, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is not officially confirmed for Nintendo Switch. Bethesda simply collaborated with Nintendo on creating the announcement trailer, so it’s possible that a Nintendo Switch version of Skyrim is not even in active development. However, the Bethesda spokesperson went on to state that Bethesda has a “partnership” with Nintendo, and the company has pledged to support the Switch.
