Next Gen systems

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like the next gen of systems slated to launch in 2012 aren't too much to get excited about. WHen 360 and ps3 came out it was all about the jump to HD, but now it feels like they are just rushing the systems out because of the competition (assuming recent reports to be true, but I expect delays). If I'm going to invest in a new gaming system, I want it to be a big jump, not just somewhat better graphics with shoddy 3D capabilities, and a slightly better online experience (if that)

Yeah, besides the Wii U with the new big screen controllers, I don't really see what they would push as a big reason to get it besides better graphics. I plan on having this 360 for a couple more years.
The only reason I'd think about a PS4 is because I haven't owned anything Sony since PS2.

3D technology is pretty cool, IMO and could be a huge part of next gen systems.
If the next PS3 and 360 come out in 2013, that will be 7 to 8 years between systems. Computer hardware evolves a good bit every single year. YOu can expect a big difference.

The graphics differences will be more than you think. The systems today are using very old computer hardware. I remember when people were saying it couldn't get much better than Xbox graphics.

I know I'd likely get the new xbox simply because odds are that it's gonna run blu-ray disks (or one can hope right?)

I mean yeah I think the graphics can always get better, but TBH, how can the hardware be that different when the new xbox models came out late last year and there's a new PS3 coming out soon?
And I seriously doubt it's going to run Blu-ray, but that would be awesome. A ton more detail can be put on there.

It'd be a serious mistake for microsoft not to use blu-ray next gen imo.

They changed the hardware because they were able to put the graphics and cpu on one chip. It's not new tech. It's the same 5 or 6 year old tech.
John Carmack a few weeks ago said "By the time the new consoles come out PC's will be 100 times more powerful than the current consoles."

Honestly, I think in the future PC's are going to be considered gaming consoles. I don't know really anyone who has a desktop for just internet and email anymore. laptops and tablets are going to take that over and I think desktops will be for gaming pcs, recording studios, and things that need serious computing.

This is exactly how my computer set up is going to be in the near future. I'm getting a friend of mine to build me a really powerful video editing desktop and I have my laptop for internet usage and email.

pc games are more fun anyway imo

I usually wait a couple years till the "hot new system" is a few hundred dollars cheaper than when it first came out, so I don't really care either way.

I usually do this too, but based on what others have said in this thread I might go camp out for the new systems then turn around and sell them on Ebay and profit from them.

I don't know many people with desktops anymore. I see smart phones, tablets, ipods, laptops (not used for gaming), etc. and most people are playing casual games on them.
But I think you're right... why have a desktop other than for gaming or business today?

The graphical leap from this generation to next won't be as much as some of you think. It will be an improvement, but the 720/PS4/WiiU graphics won't be comparable to the top tier PC graphics cards that are out today. Those cards are too expensive and would drive the new console prices through the roof. It would be bad business for the console makers to do this.

Quite honestly I've wondered about the next gen consoles for a while, like where were they going to go? How would they justify someone paying $300 for a new console? A little better and more updated graphics? I don't think that'd sell a lot of people.
Then 3D emerged, then motion capture like Move and Kinect came out. I think this is where gaming is going. I can see people using motion capture devices and 3D and playing games. Virtual reality is well on it's way. Games are going to get more immersive instead of huge graphical leaps imo. This seems to be the only way to go. Using pixels means graphics can really only get SO good. I would think that the next gen consoles are going to come out with new technologies to immerse the gamer in the world of the video game.

The sad thing is you guys dont know how bad console graphics are compared to what they could be.

The problem is, on one hand you have Gaming PC fanboys who spend at least a grand on a good solid PC, and on the other hand you have console fanboys(majority)who spend roughly $300 on a console and accessories. The comparison point is that on average, a high end video card to get spectacular video/refresh rates cost about the same, and in most cases double what a console cost. Most regular gamers, want something quick and easy, and to the untrained eye and brain...good graphics or what they percieve as being top of the line console graphics. The price is the selling points for most people to just buy a console. And you have people who are just dumb enough to just go out and buy a new gen console just for the sake of saying...."I got a new *enter name here*" They spend god knows what on it, and it's really no different. The only reason I would be forced to get a new console, is that if you it's like a jump from G1 XBOX to G1 360's, whereas you can't play online from one to the other and there are titles that are not backwards compatible. Otherwise I will just wait until the price comes down, like I did with my 360.
