I've never played an NHL and I'm really enjoying this, however idk what the hell im doing. I have to turn off the offsides rule to even play this game.
Any tips?

Don't pass the puck for more than two lines.
The rink is separated into 3rds, you can't make a forward pass from the first 3rd to the final 3rd unless you're shorthanded.

There is a setting to turn on that blatantly shows when you are offsides. It lights the whole zone up indicating DO NOT CROSS
You have to carry the puck into the offensive zone and no one else on your team can be across the line.
Dont try any deke moves at the line or else you will put yourself offsides.
Wait until your forwards are standing at the line and then carry the puck in.
Put the camera on dynamic high to see more ice
If your whole team is in the offensive zone and you accidently go back over the blue line, the other 4 members of your team have to get out of the zone too before you can carry the puck back in.

I'm sure you can google any hockey rule you don't understand.....

Go read the rules about icing and offside and you'll eventually get the hang of it. I love hockey and it's the most exciting sport to me.
And this is coming from someone who had no interest in it until 2011

Hockey fan here too. I love the game but it's one of the more rage inducing games I've played in recent memory. I either win pretty big (4 or 5 goals) or get absolutely slaughtered where there's nothing I can do about it. But that's NHL 16 so I can't say if the gameplay is still the same in that way.

I still play 16 and haven't picked up 17. Is 17 much better than 16 or should I just wait for the next one?

Didn't the NHL legalize the two-line pass.
Offsides is when you precede the puck across the opponent's blue line.

Thank you!
I couldn't play without getting hit with offsides. The offsides rule makes sense to me now. I'll have to google some of the basic rules too.

This is why it's hard for me to play games based on sports I don't watch regularly
They have all gotten so sim-heavy. I would imagine someone who doesn't watch a lot of football would probably be slaughtered in Madden these days. I used to play NBA Live, MLB Baseball, and FIFA on the PSX/PS2 all the time and never really watched those sports in real life that much.
I tried this with NBA 2K and FIFA/PES. I just don't watch enough of the real thing to really gauge what I'm supposed to do beyond get the ball in the hoop/goal. I've only ever managed to win one game on NBA 2K16.
With FIFA, Most games were either 0-1, 1-0, or 0-0. I could win some of the time, but more often then not, it was loose or draw. One difficulty level down and I was winning every match 8-0.
With the latest PES, I could never win a game.
