Well they say they did not realize how popular it would be and that they don't have "unlimited resources."

Also, SNES Classic is apparently coming.

SO either they just didn't anticipate demand, which is understandable given the markets recent general reaction to console Nintendo, or it was a stop gap to pump people up for the Switch, and maybe to get ahead of the SNES Classic, which they'll probably sell at near $100.

Either way, it does not seem it was meant as a permanent product.

I bet at some point it will go into production again and be re-released as a unit that is not so easily hacked. The current model really is shitty out of of the box anyway. I would not want that is not at least modded to reset and save from the controller.

Spot on about the credit card info, but on the NES Classic side, why are Nintendo the only company that are apparently not allowed to make a limited product?

I mean, I guess it's fine to be angry about it, but for consistency sake, please be just as critical of every company out there. Every cereal maker, every car company, every single "Limited Edition" on the market. As long as Jim is mad at all of them, that's fine. If it's just Nintendo, that's bad form.

Heck even a concert is "limited," if seats sell out, I can't get mad at an arena for not making more seats. That's on me for not getting a seat in time. People can't always have everything they want at all times if it requires physical resources of some kind. That's unrealistic.

I'm also not saying that they didn't do this on purpose, they very well may have, but it's now in a chicken or egg territory:

People don't buy the WiiU, they probably sell less VC than on the Wii > They make conservative estimate on interest in NES Classic > Produce less NES Classic > People get angry with Nintendo and urge people not to buy Nintendo products/slam them on the internet > Nintendo makes conservative amount of Switch > People like the Switch and it sells out > People get angry with Nintendo and urge people not to buy it.... > Nintendo makes conservative amount of SNES Classic > and so forth

Something's got to give. And it isn't easy to "just make more."

I read an article that compared it to Disney and their vault system of releasing old movies for a limited time.

Nintendo values their back catalog (and rightfully so, they are some of the best video games of all time) They can make way more money off of selling them on a virtual console than selling a collection of their best games at $2 (which is what the classic is essentially doing)

They will make limited runs of these once a year or so IMO, next up will be the classic SNES.

They don't market it that way.

There are ALWAYS limits to any kind of physical product. Always. You don't necessarily have to market it that way. They never announced it as a "Product Line" or a "pillar" so you had to assume this was not a longterm part of their strategy at the very least.

Or, better said, yeah they never marketed it as "Limited," but they also never marketed it as "Our new, NES Classic. Our fourth pillar that will be supported for the coming years."

What you talking bout?

People riot every year when they discontinue the McRib.

Blame Disney and their damn vault.

I just don't see the vitriol, but yeah I could be wrong.

Like:

McDonald's, what the frick?

And FWIW, they wouldn't sell near as many McRib's if it was always on the menu. Guaranteed.
