Naughty Dog's game design is outdated

A new video from NakeyJakey, a guy who makes very funny but also very insightful commentary videos on video games. A channel you should definitely check out, as his videos are all pretty awesome.
Naughty Dog's Game Design is Outdated
It's 52 minutes long but still worth a watch.
Much like he called out Rockstar after RDR2 in a video that gained a ton of attention, he now calls out Naughty Dog after TLOU2.

yeah, i don't have to watch a 52 minute video to know that. i'm sure TLOU2 plays just like the original Uncharted game.

Throw in SJW nonsense and I was done well before this game was released.

Open world is outdated!
Non open world is outdated!
Must suck so hard to be a game dev anymore.

The underlying point of his Rockstar video was makes half arse open world games. The mission structure of them is extremely rigid, you have no real freedom to do anything any other way than exactly the way they want.
The point of the Naughty Dog video is that ND makes kinda shallow, mediocre gameplay games but with enough glossy graphics and story you stay entertained, but when the story and characters are bad (TLOU2) the whole formula falls apart.

I suppose, but you could nitpick any game/genre.
At the end of the day those games (RDR2, TLOU2) were massive critical successes winning a ton of awards with sky high reviews.
Comes off as foolish to me and being a whiny little brat about it because maybe he himself didn't like them.

You consider those critiques "nitpicking"? They cut to the foundation of everything the entire games are built around.
In case you haven't noticed, professional media criticism (movies, tv, video games) has basically lost almost all credibility the last decade or so, because their reviews are driven as much about politics, social agendas, and business decisions as anything else.

I didn't watch it, seems like dull content for views hence going after the 2 biggest game devs currently out there to get said views.
Who cares. At the end of the day all that matters is sales and reviews, nothing else. Rockstar could release GTA6 tomorrow in the same format as GTA5 and have the same insane level of success.
I don't like Taylor Swift or her music, but she's one of the top 10 greatest entertainers ever. Maybe I'll make a video about how her singing style is outdated.

I suppose.
One thing I feel these super open world games don’t capture is just straight up “fun”.
They’re more interested in the wow factor and the player just booting the game up and dicking around endlessly instead of enjoying it. I think there’s a difference between enjoying an open world and just bumbling about like an idiot, setting off police alarms the more chaos you cause or more people you kill.
Rogue-lite games (if done right) I think really capture this sort of process well. Progress to a certain point against almost impossible odds and then once you die, certain things are kept and it just snowballs after countless attempts until you have a mountain of abilities, making it easier to conquer the whole game in a full run.
The game I find most exceptional in this category is Hades which just released its 1.0 patch on PC and was shadowdropped on the switch. Idk if it was on the other consoles? I think it was? I don’t know why it wouldn’t be. Great characters. Great art direction. Great voice work. Games like Hades show that you don’t have to make an entire sandbox movie production to create a game that lasts a lifetime. Games are still at their core just things you pick up and PLAY. I think worlds like Ghosts of Tsushima, (hopefully) Cyberpunk and Breath of the Wild are a few examples of what certain mechanics can help allow a game to stay relevant years later. Being able to do crazy whacky things in the air and in slow motion is what I think will keep breath of the wild and GoTsu around for a long time.

Not gonna watch all that but I agree with the premise.
Look at Dishonored vs TLOU - one makes your decisions meaningful while the other funnels you into a predetermined “movie”

Damn, pound for pound Dishonored 1 is probably my replay value king.
Loved that game.

Mozart is outdated. That doesn’t mean what he did back in the day is somehow derelict.

One of the dumbest things I've ever read.
Neither of these things are indicators of quality.

They are quite literally the only indicators.
Posted on 10/3/20 at 9:36 am to UltimateHog
Or, they are indicators of social status, and that quality can only be decided by the individual.
Posted on 10/3/20 at 9:36 am to CockCommander
Lol. Social status would equal success dumby.
Posted on 10/3/20 at 9:37 am to UltimateHog
Social status is irrelevant.
