Launches officially this week, early access began today, and the reviews are quite good.

https://www.metacritic.com/game/mortal-shell-ii/

A large demo was made available about a month ago I think.

Fundamentally a dark, gritty Souslike, with it's own unique spin on a few things.

I had never even heard of Mortal Shell 1 until the demo for 2 dropped. It apparently came out during the summer of 2020, heart of the pandemic so was overlooked, was also only 8-10 hours long, which is more of a proof of concept than an actual game, especially in the Soulslike genre, so I'm not surprised it was so forgotten.

People who played it say it captured a certain spirit of old school Souls games in certain ways but lacked a ton of polish.

The studio behind it (Cold Symmetry) is unconventional in nature. They don't have a conventional office or location or structure. The small dev team is basically from all over the world and they co-ordiante all their work remotely. Seems as much a passion project for them as a business venture.

This 2nd game is apparently a massive improvement on all fronts, first off it's now a full fledged game 30-40 hours, and the whole experience is much more polished in terms of everything, bosses, world design, camera, animations, bugs, etc.

The main gimmick is apparently Shells which are basically almost like equipable character classes. Shells have their own unique properties and abilities and attacks, and allow for different playstyles. You can level them up and stuff and the idea is you can sorta experiment with them depending on the area or boss. Firearms are also a big part of the combat loop.

They also forwent a stamina mechanic in 2 , so the combat is still very soulslike but much faster paced, you're expected to be able to dodge and attack constantly so if anything it's probably more demanding.

Based on all the feedback I'm sold, it has a physical release, so I will be picking that up and starting it later this week.

I think we are in an era where a whole generation of up and coming devs cut their teeth playing Souls games and are now wanting to make their own versions, so we are seeing a lot of these new Souls-type franchises starting up from smaller studios.

Some of them have been quite good and others quite rough, but thankfully a few of the rough ones have managed to survive and are now producing much higher qualities sequels (this, and likely Lords of the Fallen 2 next year which is also looking like a massive improvement of a so-so game and another I'll likely be getting)

Been pumped for this one. I've been waiting for a great Soulslike for months... Played this first one a few years ago and enjoyed it so can only imagine how much better the second one would be.

I am currently playing Relic First Guardian and enjoying it way more than the reviews would let you believe.

Was the first one good?

Remember hearing about it and it kinda got drowned out by every other game.

It was okay. Short and a little janky but I had fun with it.

Certainly not something you would have to play before

There was feedback the beta was too easy and the devs promised they would up the difficulty of the early game. There's now a contingent of casuals crying how it's way too hard and are mad at the devs for caving to the neckbeards.

Zoomers will never know the simple joy of unwrapping a brand new game that you are actually holding in your hands.

The clips I’m seeing online look awesome.

I am terrible about sticking with any soulslike that isn’t made by fromsoft, but I may have to add yet another title to the backlog.

This game is amazing. Truly… the exploration, combat, enemies and everything else is amazing.

It’s beautiful too on Steam

I've been way busier than usual the past few days so I've only got about maybe 8 hours in. Did the prologue area and have done a good few chunks of the next area.

Game is absolutely great as advertised. It's definitely a soulslike but it has a ton of unique interesting mechanics that make it feel like a totally different experience. Love all the mechanics, items, tarstones, upgrades, weapons, it all fits together great. The shell recovery chance system is cool too.

Trash mobs hit very hard, which I like, makes every single encounter tense, you can't screw around.

The game does a good job of being very open, giving you a ton of choices of where to go and what to do while also subtly telling you where the next place you're "supposed" to go is.

I've only had a few minor inconsequential graphical type "bugs" here and there. The first mini-boss after the prologue I accidentally rolled backwards off a cliff and he followed me off killing himself for a free win, haha. That's probably not intended if I had to guess.

Regardless, anyone who's a fan of souls type games will def. wanna get his one, as everyone was saying it's gonna be one of the upper tier non-FromSoft ones and one of the ones with the most unique mechanics.

We are probably around the same time in it. I think the boss you’re referring to, I was owning then fell and died lol.

This game feels more like DS3 and Elden Ring than any other game out there. It’s so well done
