9 was the GOAT, X was the WOAT. Not interested

I wonder if it picks up where X left off storywise or has a split timeline if Shao Kahn is a playable character.

X was complete arse. 9 was fantastic.
Hope it’s not the same as X. Would be a huge mistake.

X was soooo bad bruh. i didnt even finish the campaign or get into online. it was horrid

I liked X more than I thought I would have. I mean, the story, while not as good as IX, was a lot less frustrating to play through.

I haven't played a fighting game since the Tekken 3 days, so I'm curious how much a good story actually plays into people's opinions about these? I remember doing the story stuff with the Tekken games and being thoroughly confused. Just let me fight.

Cyrax is dead. He blew himself up destroying Sektor and the Tekunin. Sektor is clearly dead, as Sub-Zero has his head in the story mode when he makes peace with Scorpion (Hanzo finds out about how Quan Chi ordered the deaths of his family and clan from Sektor's memory banks)
Noob Saibot (Bi Han) was torn apart in MK9 when Nightwolf threw him in the Soulnado
Cyber Sub-Zero is not coming back. When Quai Liang became a revenant, he got his body back. He was fully restored along with Hanzo Hasashi (no longer Scorpion) and Jax when Sonya crushed Quan Chi's balls under her boot and Raiden destroyed the spells.
All of the rest of the revenants remain dead because Hanzo was so fricking short-sighted and selfish that he decapitated Quan Chi before they could reverse the spell.
Mileena is dead. D'Vorah (the bug chick) vomited a swarm of larvae into her mouth which picked her skull clean while she was still breathing.
Baraka is dead. D'Vorah ripped out his brain and heart.
Liu Kang and Kitana are now the rulers of the Netherrealm.
Raiden is the big bad of MK11. He was corrupted when he purified the Jinsei (World Spirit) of Shinnok's corruption...then he ripped Shinnok's head off and now carries it around as a trophy.
Raiden is also playing the role of Shao Kahn, trying to take over Outworld. The elder gods granted Kotal Kahn Mortal Kombat to protect his realm. Bo Rai Cho now trains them and it's likely that the team from MKX (Cassie Cage, Jaqueline Briggs, Takeda Takahashi and Kung Jin) possibly along with Kano's son are sent by General Blade (Sonya) to stop Raiden.

The story of X starts 2 years after the end of MK9, in the middle of Shinnok's invasion. It then jumps between three time periods:
Period 1: Between MK1 and MK2 (in the middle of MK9)
Period 2: Between 3-6 years after MK9
Period 3: Between 20-25 years after MK9
The main team you follow throughout X consists of four people:
Cassandra Cage: Daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade
Jaqueline Briggs: Daughter of Jackson and Vera Briggs
Takeda Takahashi: Son of Kenshi and SuChin Takahashi and member of the newly formed Shirai Ryu (Hanzo Hasashi's student)
Kung Jin: Nephew of Kung Lao
Quai Liang (Sub-Zero) and Hanzo Hasashi (Scorpion) are grand masters of their respective clans and both human again.
Everyone that Sindel killed except for Jax and Sub-Zero is still dead. Liu Kang and Kung Lao are still dead. Johnny Cage is a special counsel to the Secretary of Defense and Sonya's ex-husband while Sonya is a 3-star General.

they just showed a trailer with time travel in it, they can do whatever they want
this isnt some narrative-driven masterpiece that has to adhere to an established story, it's a fighting game with some cool story elements that they can take any direction they choose.
man, they were so boring.
what about Smoke and Kabal, where are they? they rocked

What’s all this 9 was awesome X was shite talk? MK9 was so slow moving, X was beautiful to watch play out.
Don’t know about the campaigns though, strictly talking online play.

Um...still dead. Sindel crushed Kabal's ventilator and broke Smoke's neck back in MK9. They're both still revenants under Quan Chi that can't be resurrected since Hanzo killed him.
You see both in Chapter 1 and you see Kabal in Chapter 8.
The following characters are either permanently dead or permanently revenants
Liu Kang (killed by Raiden in MK9)
Kitana (killed by Sindel in MK9)
Nightwolf (sacrificed himself to kill Sindel in MK9)
Sindel (killed by Nightwolf in MK9)
Kung Lao (killed by Shao Kahn in MK9)
Shang Tsung (killed by Shao Kahn in MK9)
Shao Kahn (obliterated by the Elder Gods in MK9)
Baraka (killed by D'Vorah in MKX)
Rain (burned alive in Tanya's ending of MKX)
Mileena (killed by D'Vorah in MKX)
Quan Chi (killed by Scorpion in MKX)
Jade (Killed by Sindel in MKX)
Kabal (killed by Sindel in MKX)
Kurtis Stryker (killed by Sindel in MKX)
Smoke (killed by Sindel in MKX)
Cyrax (sacrificed himself to kill Sektor in the prequel comics)
Sektor (killed by Cyrax in the prequel comics)
Goro (arms ripped off by Kotal Kahn in the prequel comics)
Noob Saibot (Thrown into a soulnado by Nightwolf in MK9)

I mean, most people are still going to buy fighting games for the multiplayer. NS does put in a lot of effort into their single player story mode though. If you just want to fight, all of their games have at least an arcade mode to fight against a ladder of CPU opponents.

The button scheme was universally over all consoles switched by one button to the right, which was horrid if you put hundreds of hours into 9.
They got paranoid about the formula getting stale and affecting sales so they threw in some new age 3 style bullshite system that makes no sense whatsoever. It plays nothing like a mortal kombat game of any kind. It’s more like Street fighter with the speed of smash brothers melee.
The great thing about 9 was it was very true mechanics wise to the old mortal kombat while still being fresh and polished for the new games. It was stiffer than X but that’s what made it great! Now Mortal Kombat is just a generic high budget fighter with the only thing separating it from the others being the aesthetic.
