How can we know this is true if…

Every rumor about MS wanting to make their games multiplatform was actually true about Sony.

ETA: Looks like denial brought us to another page. Congrats everyone!

“Now, Sony is looking at the PC market a bit differently and wants to be “aggressive” in bringing more of its first-party games to the platform at a quicker pace.”

It will be multiplayer games-as-a-service games that could potentially be day-and-date, or at least time released on other platforms. They'll hang on to their big hitters.

Yep, definitely looks that way. Maybe this was the play by Microsoft all along. Get the gaming media predicting that they're becoming the next SEGA so that everyone watches today's podcast. Seems to have worked, if so.

I mean, who knows, but there was some reports coming out of Microsoft that they were all pretty shocked at how far down the line the speculation had become on this.

That's definitely been the reporting, but isn't really what Sony said.

quote:

“If you have strong first-party content, not only with our console but also other platforms like computers, first-party can be grown with multiplatform and that can help operating profit to improve. So that is another one we want to proactively work on,” Totoki said.

He used computers as an example. Gaming media has misunderstood, or intentionally misrepresented, that as "only" computers.

I think they definitely were shocked by how wide-spread it had gotten. That is obvious because they weren't originally planning to make any statements this week.

Sounds like gaming media misunderstands a lot.

Spencer confirms that Starfield and Indiana Jones are not part of the first four games, but he doesn’t rule out the possibility for these titles to arrive on PS5 in the future. “I don’t think we should as an industry ever rule out a game going to any other platform,” says Spencer in an interview with The Verge. “We’re focused on these four games and learning from the experience. We don’t have work going on, on other franchises. But for anybody to stand up and say something’s never going to happen, I think it feels like creating more certainty in a world of gaming where you really want to respond to what customers want and what our players and creators are looking for

quote:

I asked Spencer whether there will be more multiplatform games, especially if these four are successful: Yeah, but we haven’t seen that yet. We’re obviously one of the biggest publishers on PlayStation and Nintendo today, when you think about the Activision Blizzard and Bethesda lineup of games. So we know what it means to ship games on Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo, and Xbox. These are games that originally launched on Xbox. They were Xbox-branded games and we want to see what happens, because going and doing the development work to bring them to new platforms is real work. We want to make sure that the return makes sense. We want to make sure the audience that’s there has an appetite, maybe they don’t.

So he hasn’t ruled it out?

Well, this thread did not age well

Microsoft driving here with their $3,000,000,000,000 market cap, scraping the little Sony bug off the windshield.

The rest of his answer:

quote:

I don’t want to create a false expectation on those other platforms that this is somehow the first four to get over the dam and then the dam’s going to open and that everything else is coming, that’s not the plan today. I also don’t want to mislead customers on those other platforms. We’re launching these four games, and we’re excited about it. We’re excited about the announce and everything else, but we’ll see what happens for our business.

Unrelated to this response, this is the Twitter thread from the Xbox Twitter account about the podcast today: LINK

quote:

Xbox is keeping our promise to bring more games to more players around the world.

With an incredible year of major releases like Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Avowed, Ara: History Untold, Towerborne and more — 2024 is going to be great for Xbox players around the world and we can’t wait to see you in June for the #XboxShowcase!

quote:

Today we’re also continuing our commitment to expanding the communities we reach. We are in the process of bringing 4 Xbox games to other platforms.

These are games which have been available to Xbox players for at least a year — including hidden gems that deserve to be experienced more widely, and live service games whose communities will benefit from welcoming even more players! We’ll share more details on these titles soon.

quote:

As we begin to fulfill our promise to offer Activision Blizzard games with Game Pass, we're happy to share Diablo IV will be available with Game Pass on Console and PC on March 28.

Game Pass will continue to only be available on Xbox platforms and will have all first party games playable on day one.

quote:

Xbox hardware will also continue to be a flagship experience for players and for game developers to launch games on with a robust and innovative multi-year hardware roadmap, including more console and controller options for you this holiday.

quote:

Xbox will continue to be a platform where you will play the biggest games, a platform that is dedicated to you with features like backwards compatibility, cross-save, cross-play, and robust cloud features.

quote:

This all means that the biggest games in the world will be available on Xbox, with continued Game Pass day one releases, a multi-year hardware roadmap, and a commitment to a player-first platform. We are here to help game creators reach the largest audience possible. The biggest games are larger than any one platform.

Seems like they could've silenced all the speculation last week with a simple tweet that it's for 4 games. Either A) they had some internal debate/changes of heart during the uproar or B) They're just completely incompetent when it comes to PR

Sony leading the console market is still a travesty to innovation.

It would be an amazing world with Sony's story tellers and Microsoft's tech innovations combined.
