Was chatting with Gardoki while playing it, and told him when I got to the part that Atreus finds out he's a god.
Gardoki: "He's a little shite all of the sudden."
Holy crap, I wanted to smack him. Was glad to get him back once we got to hell.

that phase was supposed to last longer too
quote:
“Atreus’ sort of moment of egos. He goes through that period of time where he starts to realize ‘we’re Gods, I can do whatever I want.’ Now in a real human life that takes a few years to develop… We didn’t have that kind of time, but we did have a lot more time than what’s allotted in the game. That was a section that we ended up cutting a good two hours out of. So, there would’ve been about 110 minutes maybe of Atreus getting more and more of a, as we call it, jerk mode… We had to shift everything back. He starts becoming a jerk right when you get to the boat…
“That begins the transition. But if you kind of B-line right exactly where you’re supposed to go, you end up accelerating through that. And it does feel very abrupt. It’s something we saw the whole time, but realized there’s just nothing we can do because we had literally cut out an entire level and rearranged a few things. So things were in a slightly different order. In doing so it kind of messed up [pacing for Atreus’ character development].”

I guess I kind of took it as he always felt inadequate because of how hard Kratos was on him. When he discovers he's a god, he all of the sudden feels like an equal, and simply can't handle it.

not what i'm saying. i'm saying the meat of the story content being the relationship between an adult and a child on a journey together with the relationship being developed with the little moments over a long period of time. the last of us is so authentic in doing that. god of war...eh. it tries, but all of the developments come in the cinematic moments. it just felt like it went beyond taking inspiration. it kind of felt like it was an attempt to copy the main hook of the Last of Us in terms of emotional impact. and in that regard, it's not anywhere close to as good. now, everywhere else it is top of the line, but the last of us is a game that resonates. this, awesome game, but not really memorable for me.
i took "forms the basis of the relationship" to mean the foundations of the relationships, I suppose. I think both narratives were executed well, but Last of Us benefited from a more linear, guided approach. It is the better game to me, as well. GOW had plenty of memorable moments for me though (the aforementioned Dark Elf gauntlet, Blades scene, last fight and Freya's meltdown, jumping off the mountain in pursuit of Baldur's dragon)

nor did it add to it.
I thought God of War was a much more exciting game. More action. More reasons to explore. I played both and have them both as game of the year. Like you said, it is not a horrible thing to compare the two.
It's also a bit different to humanize Kratos since he isn't human. I think you could tell he hated that Atreus was a god. He himself hates that he is a god.

Definitely similar stories but I thought both were done well. Joel learned to love again just like Kratos. Boy went from Boy to Atreus.
Combat was much more fun in God of War. Not really fair to compare either game because one is more survival horror and the other is more action combat oriented.
Loved the score for both. Playstation continues to impress me with the graphics they pump out of their little machines.

True! Yea, the no breaking away from Kratos was incredible and I hope other games try to emulate it. Heard it was a big pain in the arse though.

Not the contrarian, but other than it's father and son/kind of daughter, both stories are driven by completely different factors. Joel suffers loss at the beginning and sees redemption in Ellie, to the point that he makes a tragic decision at the end. Kratos has always been a monster, and is now seeking to escape all and choose a human life. But that process is slow and painful since he can't relate to Atreus at all, and in his attempts to be supportive and instructive, comes across as cold and uncaring. Then when Atreus learns his true nature, Kratos has to do a crash course at being a caring father and help navigate him through his newfound nature.
I guess you could say Kratos did suffer loss when he was tricked into killing his wife and kid, but that's so early in the development of the character and in the series, loving father Kratos is a distant memory, if he existed at all.
You'll be able to draw parallels through any game that deals in a father/child relationship on a journey. I think it detracts from a great story to say God of War is almost a Last of Us clone.

Yea, you would have to play the older games. There is a prequel that you can see the more human Kratos. I liked the reveal of where Atreus got his name. That was the first time that Kratos in THIS game showed how he could be caring if he actually felt an ounce of respect for you.

We'll agree to disagree. I think it's a lazy comparison. Just the child characters themselves are worlds different. You're babysitting Ellie, whereas Atreus is useful and pretty much an extension of Kratos when it comes to combat.
