Almost killed Jeb last night. Had a brain fart while burning to get a low periapsis on my mun pass and did not kill my throttle early enough because I was smashing z not x to kill the engine. Sweated a 3k pass over the mun, worrying about mountain ridges. He did make it around though and back home with 300 science in tow.
Is the next logistical step to land on the mun for science, or is there something else I'm missing between those steps?

I believe your next step is landing, which as I found out last night, is a bitch in zero gravity.

Wider is better.
Struts make it easy though. Like Dam Guide, I can recall using winglets as crumple zones to protect my engine while landing.
Anyone know how far down the tech tree the big stuff is propulsion wise? I want to go back to being lazy where my solution to all problems can be found in bigger and/or more rockets.

Orange tank and the bigger stuff are going to take you a little while to get. I had to explore multiple biomes and get surface samples from all of them on Mun and Minmus before I had enough.

This is why I still alternate between Sandbox and Career mode. If you get too much science too fast, you pretty much go back to Sandbox mode. I try to make it a little harder on myself by limiting stuff I do in Career mode and not using Bob/Bill/Jeb for any missions. I like seeing how many Kerbals I have killed, Bob/Bill/Jeb just respawn.

I very rarely use those three. I was thinking about building a base on Minmus to send them so they can't accidentally get put in a mission.

What's after Mun? Is it Minmus?
Posted on 4/18/14 at 12:28 pm to Henry Jones Jr
Minmus is next, its very easy if you can make it to the Mun, you only need a bit more fuel. It just has a different angled orbit.
Good idea, but I will probably stick them on Duna as an ode to Robbaz. ENDLESS SUPPLY OF CHEESECAKE!

I mainly use Jeb for actual missions, needless to say he's been in a couple of tough spots, but auto save has helped him survive this long, I used the noobs to test rockets until I got the Sputnikesque pod.
How much more fuel to get to Minmus? I came back from the Mun on a hope and a prayer.

Jeb doesn't die, you can try to murder him as much as you want and he will always come back for more missions. Same for Bill and Bob.
You have to use the recruits to actually kill someone. Even then, it's just a text file you can edit and bring them back to life. I like changing their names, so I found that text file.
You are going to need more fuel. It's a longer burn to get the orbit out that far and bring it back into Kerbin. You don't need much more though.
Sounds like you need more practice landing on the Mun to save a lot more fuel in your landing craft.

I don't go overboard with my fuel or rocket design, I stick with rockets that barely get there and back, adds more challenge.

Minmus has very low gravity as well so it's not hard to jump around to different biomes. It's also easy to escape it's sphere of influence and orbit Kerbin. You don't need much more fuel than a Mun mission.

Latest and greatest, gets to Mun and Minmus with no problems. Trying to figure out the rovers at the moment.

I started my space station. I will be attaching my two sets of tanks and escape pod to the station today. I may also put a refueling station in Minmus orbit for future missions.

Finally made a successful mün landing. Things are starting to get a bit easier now that I have these mainsail engines

I just googled a list of all the kerbin and mun biomes, holy shite. I've got a lot more exploring to do.

Minmus might be my favorite moon. I was excited to land on Mun for the first time but there's something about Minmus that keeps me going back there. It's such a fun place to explore.

Minmus is a biatch to get an encounter with, well at least for me it is. I usually just barely get it.

I did my first manned mission to Duna tonight.
Here is my Duna ship in Sun orbit preparing to burn for Duna.
After making my maneuver node I began my burn.
It takes a lot longer to get to your maneuver point when you are executing interplanetary travel.
The burn takes quite a while as well. I believe this was a 4 and a half minute burn. I watched a few videos to learn some of the basics and 4 minutes with nuclear engines wasn't too bad.
I made it to Duna with plenty of fuel remaining. The design of Duna is quite interesting.
I burned retrograde to drop my velocity as much as possible with the nuclear engines before I jettisoned them.
After deploying 4 chutes and a pretty lengthy burn I made it to the surface of Duna. Unfortunately I didn't have much practice landing and I forgot to save. I burned significantly more fuel than I had with my probes and no longer had enough for a return flight.
I did have enough fuel remaining to get back in to Sun orbit. I am now preparing a rescue mission.
I imagine the rescue mission will be more fun then a lot of the missions that I have done so far. I designed a new ship just for the mission. In order to retain my science I will attempt to dock with the ship and return the entire thing back to Kerbin.
I didn't do a great job of documenting the first portion of this mission, but the rescue will be fully documented and posted.
All of you are doing really interesting things with this game. I love the rocket designs yall are creating. It is a really fun game with which to share ideas and mission stories. Keep them coming guys.
